Rome

Going to Rome at the weekend with the wife and no children. Anyone got any sweet tips/tricks/pointers/life hacks et al?

Got a Vatican Museum tour booked already. Heard you need to book everything in advance or you'll spend most of the time queuing for shit.

TIA

I visited there almost two years ago and the only places with big queues to get in were the St Peter's and the Colosseum which had airport style security. Otherwise places were small or no queues. The Pantheon is really cool.

Ignore the guys trying to flog day coach trips to Venice and Pompeii

When you get to Collosseum, don't get hoodwinked by touts etc outside, who promise to take you on a tour that will 'skip the queues' etc...  just go through and queue up in the official bit. Even on a really busy day you'll probably not be queueing for more than 30-40mins.

Obviously gets very busy round the Vatican on a sunday.

If you are going to the main airport (Fumicino?) then just jump on the train at the airport and it's a straight 20-30min journey into the Central (Termini) Station, i think around 16euros for a return ticket. If you're from the other airport (Ciampino) you can also get to the nearest station, which is around the other side of the airport perimeter and not walkable, and an easy train journey in. Although the taxi drivers will try to charge a ridiculous amount for the couple of mile journey to this station, probably around 20 euros.

The metro has only two lines, and only one of these is any real use to tourists, but it is good value and connects the main places very well. If you do for whatever reason get on the other tube line, it makes the grimier parts on the London tube look luxurious!

Plenty of cheap, shops, bars, hotels, debauchery, in the back streets around the station (although if you're going with partner then you probably already have hotel and not looking for this sort of thing!)

Beer seems to be fantastic over there...  You can get some real oldskool lagers...  Harp. elephant lager is about 8%. Bottles of Tennents Super in the supermarkets and off-licences. Even decent bottles like Birra Moretti are cheap in the supermarkets. Bar prices vary massively. Could be 10 euros for a small beer in a flash bar, but go to a tabacchi bar near the station and you'll probably pay 2.50 euros for a 600ml bottle.

As mentioned above, Trastavere is fantastic. It's like the old town of Rome but without tourists. It's a fantastic afternoon's walk from the Vatican area, up into Trastavere, back across the river and up towards the main part of town, stopping in the bars etc.

It's a stunning place, I've been several times and still only seen a fraction of it (admittedly i'm usually there for football). But i think people are surprised at how rough around the edges Italian cities can be. Massive immigration problems. Graffiti everywhere. Keep your wits about you around the station, don't put anything down unless you don't want to see it again.

To be honest if you've never been before, unless you want to specifically see something in a museum or art gallery, you don't need to book anything, it's just a stunning place to walk round.

Still prefer the north of Italy though...  Bologna, Bergamo, Verona, etc....  stunning (but expensive). Bologna possibly the best city I've ever been to. Not yet been further south than Rome though...  would love to get to Naples and Lecce soon.

Here -  http://bit.ly/romeeat

The food is amazing there and I would get a flight just to eat out again

You have to try Taverna Trilussa - everything sick !

My ex did say that Naples terrified her and she wouldn't set foot in the city ever again. However i'd love to see the old part of town and try to find some old Maradona murals, go up to the back of the city and see the views over the city down to the sea and Vesuvius. Not to mention the football. Certainly wouldn't fancy spending more than a couple of days there though, before getting the train to somewhere else.

Find Saint Ignazio church, it was one of my favourite places. There is a miniature wooden dome inside that blew my mind, if I remember correctly it took some guy 20 odd years to build and he completed it in his 90's just before he died.

The view from the top of the Victor Emmanuel monument is well worth seeing and they do a short tour of the tunnels underneath it. The Trevi Fountain is a must see but try and get up early before the courtyard is literally jam packed with tourists. To be honest the waiting times looked a lot longer than 45 mins at the Colosseum so we paid for a tour, it was utterly shit and you could barely hear what he was saying. It was worth paying extra just to skip the line but if I ever went again I'd get there early before the crowds.

It is definitely best to stray from the path when it comes to food and drink as the prices in and around the tourist areas are ridiculous.

The Vatican is spectacular. How they cut and laid the tiled floors to millimetre perfection without power tools is beyond me.

Yep. Going again soon. Mondello near Palermo. Def good for couples. Palermo is lively, but we're on a family holiday.

Also the advice i was given is to not go to the shiny new fangled restaurant as they typically will be for tourists and not authentic.
