WTF is he doing here with the tempo (@6:20), annoying the camera pans away, looks like its before he had serato / traktor

Nah, you can see his Traktor box sitting on the front of the booth there and all the records have his old 'Alive' logo on 'em.

SIGS, EVERYTHING SIGS.

He used to play Chibuku here quite a lot. Every time he destroyed the place. If you don't like Andy C, I'm sorry but you're a lifter

Moondance NYE '96 in Hounslow - he dropped Recharge while I was standing near the main speakers and I got a nosebleed. Bouncers thought I'd been beaten up.

Mid '97 he did a small One Nation in Camberley. Stevie Hyper  was MCing and it was all Speed Of Sound era stuff and he battered it. Pretty much everyone from my estate was in there (even though they mostly liked Happy Hardcore)  No recording unfortunately.

MOS festival at Knebworth in 2001 (?). Battered it. One of the stage dancers got her tits out iirc

prob loads more. Lost count of how many times I saw him between 96-2005.

The frustrating thing with Andy C is that even now, when he's at his peak, he is untouchable - and he still does love all that proper stuff so will play it regularly. But for the last 15 years, he's played these sets that are designed to please one and all - so for 10 mins at a time you'll hear stuff that sends you mad, followed by some absolute toilet that sends you to the bar/smoking area.
It makes for quite an unsatisfactory experience if you're a long time drum & bass listener who has a good idea of what they like. Of course most younger kids buying the tickets simply think the entire thing is the best thing they've ever heard. He is a consummate professional in that sense.

When he is in that Energizer bunny zone, just bouncing and mixing rolling tunes to the highest standard, he's the best DJ you'll ever see. So much energy and vibes.

Would still be amazing if he could be persuaded to do a smaller scale tour - sub 1000 capacity venues, music policy of some sort which excludes pop & bass. Really don't think he'd go for it though these days - he loves that cheesy stuff he plays as much as he loves Watermelon, Medicine Remix, Being With You, Terrorist etc.

My one abiding memory of the guy is being behind the decks at Detonate night at Nottingham Rock City about 2006/2007.

I had just double dropped and was absolutely spangled off my tits and spent the first 10-20 minutes going nuts at the standard double drops and teases (r-type over cause & effect still sticks with me).

I stopped for a breather and sparked a spliff (this was pre smoking ban) and just watched him do his thing from above the decks.

By the end of his set I’d given up dancing and chain smoked 3-4 pre-rolled Js just witnessing him systematically destroy the dance. The guy runs the decks like a musical instrument. Like Hendrix on guitar. Somehow completely calm and nonchalant while brocking out hard throughout.

It ruined me and I had to jump in a taxi after listening to 20 mins of Hype playing jump up nonsense afterwards killed the vibe

Later than that IMO. This place started in 02 and he wasn't regarded as the undisputed don back then. And was it even Hype he nicked it off? Randall is and was the king of the 90s for me. Even Mickey Finn was top of the bill 95-97.

My memory is hazy but I'm sure Andy C didn't start the double dropping quick mixing ninja skills until around the Bodyrock era? Before that he was just rolling out clean and clinical sets. As soon as he started showing off though nobody has come close.

Hype had the production output on a different level, what with Ganja Cru/Playaz camp.

Bodyrock was released 01

Yeah, I heard sets from 98 where Andy had a soundboard with the classic sound-system samples on, beeps and sirens. Far from the polished, EQ swooshing sets of today.

In hindsight Hotness was the first time the crown slipped. The fact he was opening sets with garbage like that and Moving Fusion for a solid year and still nobody could touch him is testament to his legacy.

Hotness got pulled up for multiple reloads. We only have ourselves (and the MCs bawling for it) to blame.

that year it was. In the 'Rave Dome' which was a converted leisure centre of some sort. There was definitely some indoor tennis courts roped off in there

yeah, Hype was definitely the man before Andy. Randall might've been for 'the heads' but Hype was doing the peak time crowd pleasing/anthems type sets that the Happy Hardcore crowd would stay for if it was a mixed event. Changed around 2001ish I guess. Shame they didn't b2b a 93-96 set at the XOYO thing.

I think Andy C really left other DJs for dead around 2001. His sets changed a bit by then in terms of all these double drops and teases.

But, 2000... Mampi Swift > everyone else. His set at Best Of British August 2000 is as good as any Andy C set you'll hear. Might not cram as many tunes him but the selection and most of all the blends are so so perfect.
