Who did the punching I don’t know. It was a story that went round at the time, I’d like to believe it’s true though, it’s pretty funny.

could be wrong but think Hype might've been involved? He hammered the original VOTS in pretty much every set I heard bitd

Hype use to drop that version with the alternative intro, like the 'ding' sound is slower at the start (only way i can describe lol)

This one?

They did a few little changes and sped it up so it would mix with 96 DnB. Got in the Top 40 briefly!

Yeah thats the one bro, didn't know it charted.
96-99 was Hype's peak imo, both for production and dj'ing

Remember the first time i saw him mix that VOTS, he barely even touched the pitch just put his finger on the records. He just made mixing look so easy back then, i actually think he stopped giving a sh1t after about 2001 and just saw dnb as a job lol

Yeah for real man. Hype definitely played a huge part in making it as big as it was, he spun it every set for years. I remember seeing him at a little club in Camberley in 1995, spent the whole time peering over the decks watching him mix as I wanted to learn a couple of tricks I had heard him do. When he pulled out Valley Of The Shadows it was the white label promo version and the label was so battered it had worn through the paper in places. It’s probably fair to say he liked that tune lol.

Sound in Motion (Killbox RMX)

What’s with those lame snares, in so many tech tracks this year.

Aren't they the worst. Seem to remember Noisia using this one first around 2006-7. A weak snare can completely ruin a tune that might otherwise be pretty good.

That’s the first of those remixes I really haven’t liked. Just sounds like any other dirty tech tune.

Sound In Motion is a Ram fave of mine, so maybe I’ve just got the feels here.

Benny L remix of Recharge is decent enough.

I quite like this guy, he's doing jump up / big smashers right.

Ah nice one, I remember hearing that second one on the radio a couple of months back but not having a clue how to describe it well enough to get an ID on here.

Fair play on that recharge remix as well, wasn't keen on any of the remixes I'd heard so far but that is rather good.

I think Misanthrop really exploited that snare the most

The Sound in Motion isn't bad apart from the said snare and the corny effect on the 'Sound........In....... Motion' Vocal before the drops, that's horrible.

Snare on the orignal is epic, smash business

Noisia started that wispy dickhead snare trend with Floating Zero. Tbf I doubt they realised that the entirety of the tech drum and bass producing world would then jump on it and clone it in every track for the next 10 years

Back onto these remixes, I have always hated the original, but I think Metrik's actually made a pretty big improvement on it. Sort of out Sub focus'd Sub focus at his own game.

Benny L remix of Recharge is tastefully done but can't hold a candle to the perfection of the original. What a bassline.

You got his metalheadz EP?
Hold It Down is absolutely crazy, those answer bass stabs on the second drop make me wanna be extremely violent.

Such good lad, he's definitely going all the way. Gutted he didn't get best newcomer or best tune (low blow) last week.

Yep.

Wasn't expecting much from them though to be honest, just do not like that "neurofunk" vibe at all, completely soulless music in my eyes (ears). A little bit miffed they had that track because I'm the same, it's one of my absolute percys.

SIGS, EVERYTHING SIGS.

I remember a Mefjus studio tech masterclass where he showed how to make those high pitched snares,
heard it in so many tunes after that.

He was/is the main perpetrator
I played after him once and every tune he played had that snare in it, then he played True Romance and I'm sure he'd made an edit of it and added his snare in lol

lmao ffs

X-Ray original was one of the last bits from Sub Focus I got, Scarecrow on the flip was wicked - it had more of that older Ram feel and sound than X Ray too.

Wouldn't have made it to Molten Beats though, none of these would. that was Ram's finest hour imo

I think after X-Ray, Druggy was the only sub focus track I still rate. Everything else went massively shit

Swamp Thing and Juno were good
His tunes and Ram's pressings were so loud that I had to gain them down about 30% compared to everything else I played to get them to sit right in the mix

Strobe was what put me onto SubFocus, one of his first and still his best tune by far imo. Drum work from the intro is sick.

Yes, X Ray was his first release on Ram I think
Prior to that had all been Frequency and other labels

I still love Ghost on Infrared, those drums are absolutely motoring after the drop

Just looking through his 2007+ releases. Utterly awful I'd forgotten half of them existed.
