Where I work we split tips up with everyone who works on the night and I'm happy with that setup. What people don't realise is that a lot of these chain restaurants (think Cote/Pizza express) take all 12.5% and none of it goes to the staff who work in the restaurant itself. Completely unethical and that's why it's important to double check with the staff when you pay the bill If any of it actually goes to the waiters/kitchen etc.

so you don't think having clean knives and forks is part of the service?

Of course that is not part of the service, clean knives and forks are the basics

@Shiverman - I get your POV but in hotels especially, bartenders and waiting staff get tipped and the Chefs were always paid significantly more than everyone else, so fuck them!

Hardly, clean knives and forks are not part of the service in the same way having a table to put a plate on and a chairs to sit on is not part of the service, they are the absolute basics.

Bartenders almost never get tipped in the UK. Wait staff do. Bar staff make all the drinks for wait staff whilst serving the rest of the bar, and are on the same wage. Everyone has to pull their weight, it's not just the wait staff providing the service, it relies on all the cogs. Chefs don't make more than the rest of the staff, except obviously the head chef, who doesn't take tips because they're management.

I mean, I can see your reasoning but you're completely wrong.

Maybe its changed then but in the 15 years I stupidly spent working in that sector, that was exactly how it worked. Chefs were always paid significantly more than anyone else and Bartenders in hotels often get tipped, plus the tips they get from serving bar food.

Generally I used to make more in tips working hotel bars that I ever did from waiting tables...especially when your Badonde and Badrid types walked in ordering the £100-200 bottles of wine!

I guess hotels are different then, but in all my years working in bars, bartenders made dick all in tips compared to wait staff, and the chefs were on the same/similar wage. The main advantage to that line of business was being constantly shitfaced.

When I worked in a manor house the kitchen staff (including the potwash) earned more than the waiters, but didn't get tips. It was rare, but some people would buy a round for the kitchen staff to show their appreciation.

He's new to this game, cut him some slack.

My parents are scousers, they moved down south 10 years before I was even born. I suppose technically I'm a scouser in that my parents were born there, but it's only in the same way Gutless is technically male because he was born with a penis.

I don't tend to tip for drinks other than if it's table service.

Tip for food, cabs and hairdressers as standard unless it's poor service.

I find it annoying in the States, feeling obliged to tip anyone you come across, it soon adds up on a two week break.
