Are they actually selling for those prices though or is it just hopefuls?! Looking through the sold listing shows a different story..

There's good deals to be had if you're prepared to take the time to look around, I reckon anyway.

I was watching a pair of 1200 Mk5 (not m5g) that looked in real nice shape, they ended up selling for 1100!

It's a bit of a lottery, I guess it depends on the effort you go to with cleaning / nice photos etc.

Yeah the mk3's & 5's etc will always fetch a higher price, less common, newer etc. They don't offer anything different though so unless you've got the disposable readies and REALLY love quartz lock, don't bother.

£500 is a realistic for a well ‘loved’ pair. Expect dents and to need to replace the phono and earth.

After that it goes up based on condition. £500 for a single 1210 with a box and lid in new condition is not unreasonable.

Narrowly missed a pair yesterday for £545 that needed some tlc.

anyone tried the new pioneer technics copies? had a little play on a plx1000 in a shop once, felt quite nice but you dont really know until you use them in anger though i suppose

theyve got a budget one too, pair for £600 seems reasonable, surely better than reloops

They're pretty much the same thing internally as the reloops in a fancier case. Really disappointing.

Even the new Technics decks are getting criticism because of the digital pitch control, I still want one!

A mate of mine just picked up a pair of 1200s, great condition, with lids, for £600.

He must have been watching ebay like a hawk, but it's do-able.

Yeah, you're paying more because it says Pioneer on them when really they're no different, and plastic. At least Reloop are using a metal top plate.

Basically any turntable that isn't Technics is a variation on this design (and possibly even manufactured by them) so like EQ says you're just paying for the badge. Reloops seem to be the best value of them all.

Ive held on for beards now waiting to have the money to get a pair of technics but the older my child gets, the less money I have. I would look a bit of a wanker spending a bomb on technics when theres ickle cutesy shoes to buy and books with talking foxes

I wouldnt be overly bothered about dents and scratches but if the motor is iffy or or the insides, does it cost a fortune to fix?

It can do, it'd be more likely a problem with the arm than the motor, they rarely go wrong. If it looks ok on the outside generally there shouldn't be much wrong on the inside (unless it's had something spilt on it)

If you're on a limited budget why not get one, then save for a second? Also Geordie is right, Gumtree is where you'll find one cheapest.

Might not be a bad idea that. At least then I can emotionally blackmail the missus into an early xmas present by glumly playing 1 record at a time

Easy to fix, finding parts is getting more tricky. Make friends with someone that’s hand with a soldering iron.

For unknown reasons I was compelled to have a browse in the local cash generator when walking past last year

Noticed a Technics box on the bottom of a trolley full of stuff which had not been put on display. It was a 1200 vgood condition, priced at £150 so I couldn't leave it. Felt pretty smug with that.

Doesn't seem long ago everyone was embracing cdjs offloading them £100 a turntable

A mate of mine bought technical years ago and as he was shit at mixing he never used them. Said he practically gave them away to the first person who asked. I've never forgiven him

I will never buy anything reloop again. I had a 4 channel mixer a while back that was a djm800 copy but about £500. Sounded absolutely fucking dreadful, actually put me off mixing for ages cos every mix sounded like shit. Got a vestax pmc and was like I'd had my ears syringed.

Basically I'd be careful thinking that reloop stuff is ok, there's probably some small but important components that work and crucially sound way better in other things that looks the same.

Yes you could be right, I can't imagine anything that would get in the way of the signal path on a turntable but there might be a few better components in the Pioneer, the arm is probably made of better quality materials.

There's nothing quite like Technics though, even if they're all beat up you can still get them working. I've got a pretty decent stash of parts which I've had for ten years now probably and I've never needed to use any of them.

I bought mine for £300 10 years ago including some ortofon concordes, and they are still great. And they've been pretty well abused, I got them serviced recently because I poured a whole beer over one, still works absolutely fine.

It's been the same for years, You can probably still pick up a set for £300 if you look properly but you run the risk of them needing a bit of TLC. If you stretch to £500 You'll easily find a set in decent condition.
