There's several strong contenders for me:

Periphery - III Select Difficulty

Devin Townsend - Transcendence

2814 - Rain Temple

Stranger Things OST Vol. 1

Infinity Shred - Long Distance

i've only managed to listen to about the first three-quarters of RTJ3 so far and sonically it sounds very good... probably el-p's best work of the three... but i need much more time, and less background noise, to properly absorb the lyrics. the two tracks i've lived with for a few weeks - talk to me and 2100 - are fucking brilliant though

Not a fan of the RTJ3 production. It just feels a bit too EDM to me.

RTJ have a 'big' sound - it's not old skool stripped back hip hop by any means but the beats are superb and really well produced. The lyrical content and delivery is soooo good though. Nothing out there that really sounds similar to RTJ in my opinion.

I always thought RTJ sounded very progressive and forward thinking. It sounds very modern and  rugged. You know an El-P beat when you hear one.

They weirdly remind me of Outkast at times as well.

i think listening to any RTJ just in headphones on your way to work doesn't quite do it justice. I agree with Daz - it's produced to be played LOUD.

el-p is proof that quality does eventually rise to the top (mike too, to a slightly lesser extent i guess) ... he's been years ahead of virtually everyone in the industry, doing his own thing, for 20 years now. there's still nothing in the world that sounds like Funcrusher Plus. Admittedly he had toned down his beats and rhymes a bit to make them more accessible

Album of the Year, 4 days in to January?

The only albums I'm even aware are coming this year are the XX and Jay-Z.  Really wasn't alot I liked last year, depsite the recommendations in the 2016 thread.
Really like RTJ3 though.

Oh, just realised I posted a load of 2016 albums thinking this was an album of 2016 thread. Understandable really seeing as you're not likely to discuss album of the year 2017 just 4 days into the year.

Ah it's time for my yearly "I need to listen to more new albums in 2017" statement to myself which I always fail with.

yesterday's gone by loyle carner is wonderful

i've mentioned him a few times before, but this debut album is one of the best UK hip hop albums for some time imo. just a shame that a fair amount of the tunes had already been released...

Yeah I really rate Loyle. Apparently he's great live.

Ocean Wisdom's album last year is one the best hip-hop albums for a long time imo. Hoping Loyles will be this years stand out.

Shobaleader One (Squarepusher's band) have an album out soon. Live covers of Squarepusher classics:

I have seen them live and they are sick. I wouldn't say this track is the absolute best example but it's pretty tight.

Pretty impressed by Wiley's Godfather on first listen. Lyrics, production and features are all top notch. No real duds or filler.

On a second listen, the Loyle album would be better if his lyrics/song topics weren't so wet.

I find it hard to get excited about UKHH anymore. It all just seems very regurgitated.

Listened this morning and liked it a lot. You're right though, there's a real lack of energy/variety.

The high focus label is sick imo.

yeah, he is a bit wet, but i like his flow and the sincerity of his voice. shame 'tierney terrace' didn't make the album too. live he has a lot of energy which kinda sells it all a bit better. i do think the song about his imaginary little sister is quite weird though

and yes, high focus is an amazing label. virtually everything they've put out has been a banger imo. jam baxter has taken over from chester p as the most interesting british mc to my ears. shout out to jehst though... i hear he's got a new album out this year btw (finally)

keen to check out Wiley's new album godfather this afternoon if i get time
