I’d say he has done a far better job on North Korea currently than his predecessor.

Getting American hostages released, getting the testing site dismantled and an official end to the Korean War beats “containment”.

Convinced that China have had far more to do with the improved Korean situation than Trump.

Only because he’s been twisting their arm around trade etc in tough sanctions led by the US through the UNSC.

It’s no co-incidence that things have started to happen when they have.

I remain unconvinced. Things started to happen because NK built some nukes and pinged a few misses over Japan, not because Trump was elected. America were always gonna turn up the rhetoric in the face of that no matter who was in charge, and China was always gonna step in eventually to chill things out again because they don’t want the US going to war on their borders. Trump has done nothing special, he’s just blown a lot of hot air all over the place acting like billy big boots and embarrassed half of his country.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/reparations-happy-hour-white-black-buy-drinks-free-bar-oregon-portland-a8371786.html

In Portland, Oregon, organisers of the “Reparations Happy Hour” invited black, brown and indigenous people to a bar and handed them $10 bills as they arrived, a small but symbolic gift mostly funded by white people who were asked not to attend.
Brown Hope, a local activist organisation, wanted the event, which was held Monday, to be a space for people of colour in a mostly white city to meet one another, discuss policy issues and plan potential action.

On the separation of children as young as one from their parents whilst immigration processes them:

In a tweet on Saturday, Donald Trump, who as president guides the application of immigration laws, blamed Democrats for the separation policy.
“Put pressure on the Democrats to end the horrible law that separates children from there [sic] parents once they cross the Border into the US,” he wrote.
The reasoning by which the president held Democrats responsible for a policy announced and followed by his own administration was unclear.

So Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump have both touched down in Singapore in what feels like one great big microdot trip.

Projected outcomes of this one?

I've been critical of Trump over the "Fire and Fury" comments and pulling out of the meeting, but actually so far whatever unorthodox approach he has taken has worked. Their tone has changed completely and the universal sanctions have clearly started to bite.

I'd be amazed if they gave up their nukes after what happened to Saddam and Gadaffi and how much time, effort and money they invested into getting the programme to completion.

well, he has his negotitation tactics nailed down.

i think he'll get buttered up a treat and he's going to grant a lot of concessions and legitimise a dynastic stalinist dictatorship that has hundreds of thousands of its own citizens in work camps.

A WWE style Royal Rumble is the only way to sort this out.

I'm not too fussed what North Korea do in their own country. Our experiments in trying to spread democracy around haven't gone too well and "legitimate" Maoist (arguably more oppressive than Stalin) China far have more of their citizens in gulags and a "President for life" until he anoints his successor.

I'd be quite happy with just avoiding nuclear war tbf.

Trump v Kim face off in 90 minutes and Dennis Rodman has arrived.

Puts Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt at the Yalta conference to shame.

My betting is that very little detail will actually be agreed but Trump will claim a huge breakthrough and success.

Which he has every right to do.

The Korean War is officially over, missiles are no longer flying over Japan and busy international aviation routes, US hostages have been released, the hermit kingdom have come in from the cold and they are talking.

Better than playing nuclear chicken and kicking the can down the road. Unorthodox, but seems to have got results. We’ve seen what foreign policy orthodoxy has got us down the years.

Had a good old laugh at Dennis Rodman last night but I actually have a lot of respect for what he's done over this whole thing. Sometimes you need someone completely leftfield to try and help thaw out a tense situation.

A victory for basketball diplomacy.

This video the US showed Kim on an i-pad before the meeting is hilarious https://www.theguardian.c...kim-singapore-bromance

https://www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/news/global-opinions/wp/2018/06/12/a-summit-without-substance/

The key point was No. 3 — “Reaffirming the April 27, 2018, Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] commits to work towards the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula” — and on closer examination it, too, is empty blather. I can commit “to work towards” beating Roger Federer at Wimbledon, but that doesn’t mean that I will ever reach the goal.

The Singapore Declaration repeats virtually verbatim the pledge that North Korea made not only on April 27 but also on numerous other occasions stretching all the way back to 1992. That’s right — North Korea has been promising to denuclearize for 26 years, and in that time it has not only acquired an estimated 60 nuclear weapons but also the ballistic missiles to deliver them.

It was never going to happen in the space of a few hours of meetings, was it?

I’m not sure quite what people expected out of it.

The fact that there are no longer ICBM’s flying over Japan and the two factions are making conciliatory noises and talking at head of state level must surely be lauded.

Did anyone else see the Hollywood blockbuster style trailer video the US made for Kim? It's fucking bizarre, it felt so much like a Southpark parody.

it's mental, you know trump ordered and approved that. pure (awful) style over substance.

it's going really well! never mind that nothing has actually happened except a propaganda coup for a repressive dictatorship.

I much preferred the constant ICBM tests and game of nuclear chicken between two countries with no diplomatic relations or contact.

Kim is the legitimate leader of a nuclear power - that’s just a fact. This whole “legitimizing” thing is laughable. Do a deal with the devil if it takes the world further away, not closer to a war that would be absolutely horrific even with conventional weapons.

@Law, yeah that video was insanity. Destiny Pictures 😂. I imagine their intelligence said that he was a big movie fan, so that would woo him. Very Trump, “the king of tacky” as Carla Bruni described him. It’s also quite amusing that despite the flash trains and cutting edge tech, America won’t be investing leaving it to Japan, China and South Korea cos “that’s their neighborhood”.
