Back on topic, trump laments statues' destruction as they are beautiful pieces of art. he's not always been so concerned about it

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/07/trump-files-when-donald-destroyed-priceless-art-build-trump-tower/

To build his skyscraper, Trump first had to knock down the Bonwit Teller building, a luxurious limestone building erected in 1929. The face of the building featured two huge Art Deco friezes that the Metropolitan Museum of Art wanted to preserve. The museum asked Trump to save the sculptures and donate them, and the mogul agreed—as long as the cost of doing so wasn’t too high.
But then, according to journalist Harry Hurt III in his book Lost Tycoon, Trump discovered that taking out the sculptures would delay demolition by two weeks. He wasn’t willing to wait. “On his orders, the demolition workers cut up the grillwork with acetylene torches,” Hurt wrote. “Then they jackhammered the friezes, dislodged them with crowbars, and pushed the remains inside the building, where they fell to the floor and shattered in a million pieces.”
The art world was shocked. “Architectural sculpture of this quality is rare and would have made definite sense in our collections,” Ashton Hawkins, the vice president and secretary of the Met’s board of trustees, told the New York Times. Robert Miller, a gallery owner who had agreed to assess the friezes, told the paper that “the reliefs are as important as the sculptures on the Rockefeller building. They’ll never be made again.”

Pretty much only family left. Lots of empty positions no one wants to fill.

A source familiar with Breitbart's operations told me they would go "thermonuclear" against "globalists" that Bannon and his friends believe are ruining the Trump administration, and by extension, America.

Globalists, in alt right parlance, meaning Jews.

Does it? I consider it to mean neo-cons, of the kind currently drawing up plans to invade Venezuela.

Yes. And in this case Bannon hates Trump's son in law, Kushner, who is Jewish. It's clear that's who Breitbart are referring to.

If you see a right wing source say it it's a subtextual code for jew. It's one of the words most put in triple parentheses to indicate Jews.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_parentheses

Google (((globalists))) and you'll get some lovely results.

I've never been personally convinced that Bannon was the kind of white supremacist dark lord proto-fascist.

Always thought he was something of a bogeyman for the left.

He hasn't said enough publicly for the characteristics ascribed to him and what he has said doesn't tally.

If anyone has any evidence to the contrary then I'll gladly take a look.

The one good thing about him was not wanting to get involved in foreign military interventions. There's now a worrying amount of hawks and generals surrounding Trump and he's seen what a few Tomahawks can do for his approval ratings.

But he did push the isolationism angle and wanted to stop spunking money on foreign wars, he was about his money like any true American

The alt-right then wasn't the same alt-right of today.

It started out as a tug of war between young, politically motivated insurgent Republicans who were making creative memes and were jaded by endless ridiculous foreign wars rising up against the GOP establishment and the neo-Nazi, basement dwelling, Subway serving, 4CHAN surfing Whiskey Bill types.

The reasonable wing split into the "new right" and the "alt-right" tag was co-opted by the kind of Nazi scum seen in Charlottesville.

A little bit like DNB sub-genres really.

“The Trump presidency that we fought for, and won, is over,” Bannon said Friday, shortly after confirming his departure. “We still have a huge movement, and we will make something of this Trump presidency. But that presidency is over. It’ll be something else. And there’ll be all kinds of fights, and there’ll be good days and bad days, but that presidency is over.”

“Ethno-nationalism — it’s losers. It’s a fringe element,” Bannon told the magazine. “I think the media plays it up too much, and we gotta help crush it, you know, eh, help crush it more.”

“These guys are a collection of clowns,” he added.

Doesn't sound like much of a white supremacist to me. Nor do literally any of the few things he has been reported as saying publicly, ever. Including the big speech he made years ago threatening war with China.

He's a catholic for a start. Doesn't exactly fit the WASP profile of your average American neo-Nazi.

Leftie boogeyman imho.

Re: American presidential election 2017/08/20 01:19:45 (permalink)
A short time later, a crowd surrounded another man in a Trump hat and screamed expletives in his face, saying “no one likes you” and chanting “go home!”

Imani Williams, a 27-year-old Connecticut woman aligned with the counterprostestors, tried to defend the man as others spit at him, sprayed him with silly string, and blew clouds of vaporizer smoke in his face.

“I couldn’t get through a KKK rally with the same treatment,” Williams, who is black, explained a moment later. “But we shouldn’t be like them . . . It’s the right thing to do at the end of the day. We’re all part of the same country. It’s unfortunate what’s happening but the response we should have is to be nonviolent.”

After Williams tried to intervene, police arrived and led the man, Sean Cronin, out of the crowd.

“I guess people can’t talk,” Cronin said after he had been escorted out of the crowd. “They need to attack. It just turned into a mob pit.”

Minutes after speaking to reporters, Cronin was again confronted by counterprotesters who shouted “Nazi!” as he walked out of the Common.

This is why I think political violence and the whole lynch mob mentality is a very slippery slope. This event today didn't look to me like a Nazi/white supremacist event (one of the speakers was an Asian senator candidate surrounded by "black lives do matter" placards) but emotions and anger were running so high after Charlottesville that lots of apparently "normal" people attending a free speech rally were called "Nazis" with the crowd whipped up into a "punch a Nazi" frenzy.

That Imani Williams said it perfectly imo. I won't lose any sleep about some of the rabble from last week getting a clump, but once it starts getting into more grey areas and people can just point and shout "Nazi" and attack people from behind a mask in a braying mob then it becomes a tit for tat escalating shitshow.

He has an errrm, interesting backstory.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/08/23/the-strange-story-of-that-blacks-for-trump-guy-standing-behind-potus-at-his-phoenix-rally/?utm_term=.818d24681a11

I'd say he's real. America has all kinds of loons from black Nazis to permed white women pretending to be black activists.

There was a picture from Charlottesville of a black fella in a cowboy hat waving the Confederate flag facing down a white bloke with glasses carrying a "black lives matter" flag.

LOL @ telling a crowd of 20 angry people that they better be scared because you're about to pepper spray them. What did he expect?

The anarchist brigade being full of bellends is nothing new, it's not an antifa phenomenon. There has always been this hardcore contingent. And yes, many are just as bad as those they're fighting. However if someone uses this to build up the case that as a generalisation both sides are just as bad as each other, they're likely a delusional racist prick.

It depends what you're talking about. If you're talking about propensity for street violence then frankly I would say that ANTIFA have been worse, up until the death in Charlottesville. If you're talking about how poisonous the ideology is then yes, genuine Nazism is worse. The problem is that the people they attack aren't all Nazis. Communism is also a hideous ideology responsible for tens of millions of deaths.

I agree that if we narrow the discussion down to the occasions when antifa have been more violent, they appear to be the more violent ones. However if you look at deaths caused by the extreme right vs. those caused by the extreme left in the states over the left decade, the extreme right have the better k/d.

Re. communism - you can argue it's flawed, naive, an incomplete proposal etc., and of course it has been abused by authoritarian wankers - but it's hardly a hideous ideology. McCarthyism is alive and well

In practice it has been a hideous ideology.

Beating the fuck out of people because you don't like their politics and using violence to curtail free speech is frankly a rather similar M.O. to the people they want to "smash".
