new one. the best ive done yet by a good distance i'd say. actual bassline, decent structure etc

still got a lot to learn but loving the mpc, a lot of fun

Sounds pretty good. The sub is a bit indistinct on my monitors, needs some harmonics to make it stand out.

Something I finished yesterday. No U-Turn vibes with an abstract beat, mentasms and shexy female vocals

Kind of, but not in that way. Either use a heavily low passed square wave for your bass (cutoff at about 200 hz) or gently saturate the sub - that will give it the harmonics it needs.

ah cheers. am just using an mpc + bundled software atm. there's no saturation plug-in/effect sadly but there is one basic synth i think so will have a look

4 weeks into being a jungle don and I'm quite enjoying myself. Hitting a stumbling block and then spending hours doing one little thing is a bastard though. I've been bothering Law quite a lot and I'm sure he's going to kill me soon.

I'm using FL Studio which most people seem to despise but it's all I know from the Kent Pricks heyday. Tried to use Ableton to begin with but couldn't get the crack to work. Not ready to post an examples yet but maybe in another 4 weeks I'll share with the class.

Switched to Ableton today and my productivity has gone down significantly. Spent 10 minutes looking for preferences earlier lol. Fuck sake.

Ableton is so much better when you get your head round things like parallel processing in racks

What did you use before? I use Reason and am considering switching to Ableton.

It was called jungle in those days, not drum and bass. That came later

Do it.

Make sure you get a copy with max4live so you can connect LFO tools and envelope followers to anythink, makes it far easier to get natural organic variation in sounds.

I've been watching a lot of tutorials but it's still very confusing at the moment

Ableton baffles the shit outta me, and the fact it does only makes me angrier.

Converting drums to MIDI track is also cheating surely? A lot of it feels like cheating in fact.

I prefer not to convert to MIDI when using drum loops and the like. Kind of feels like I'm doing something too modern.

Of course not, how do you think producers did their drums back in the day with samplers and cubase? MIDI was the only way to do it back then!

^ Agreed.

I used to be reluctant to do too much conversion to midi or vice versa, or I'd minimise the amount of bouncing to preserve audio quality, or I'd keep a separate copy of drums on a different channel so that I could try and add back in the "air" later on. I've realised it's nearly always better to think 'fuck it' and move on, even if it means lots of processing then bouncing then re-slicing to drum rack and repeating.

Well I feel much better about the whole thing now. Enormous classics are just around the corner I imagine.

The important things is to make good tunes. Anything that makes the process easier is a good thing.

Some nice bits in that Icicle video - in fact he's got a few decent ones knocking about and uses a very similar setup to mine; Ableton, NI Komplete, Maschine, etc. Definitely going to try using some of those drum tips - some really nice advice in there about getting them to kick, click - adding saturation, white noise, etc.

Already got some decent live drum plug-ins through NI Komplete but Addictive Drums 2 looks awesome. Going to get that on the DL now.
