Toying with the idea of getting an analogue synth module to make 90's sounding bass.

Any ideas?

Really unnecessary what with the powerful soft synths and samplers around these days but I'd never discourage someone from buying a hardware synth. What style of bass are you talking about?

Inevitability is my favourite of them, or possibly Natural Resource.

Cheers man. Inevitability was always one of my favourites, but it's about 3 years old and I wish we could have made it today, now we have a few more tricks up our sleeve. A lot of that track is sampled from the beginning of the first episode of Dexter ;)

Detour is another one of my faves, just because i think it's the most original thing we've done.

Got something on the go now that I'm excited about. Might up a sneak peak.

Yeah I did think that and have been trying for ages using Logic's software synths to recreate the sound I'm after but failing every time I do. All I seem to be able to make is the 2005 jump up style noise that I really dislike lol!

Not DnB, but nowhere else to put it (does the search function even work?)

You could recreate that kind of sound with any soft synth and a copy of Izotope Trash 2.

Something new on the go. Excuse the 128kps clip but hoping it'll end up relesed at somepoint.

I was gonna post up my attempts at making them sounds in ten minutes in Ableton's operator synth but it won't be very useful if you aint got it!

Look up '808 bass' on youtube and go from there.

Basically you want to play with pitch drop envelopes on the start/tail of the sound, you probably want a touch of square wave at the start of the sound (with a sin underneath as the main body) and plenty of saturation/distortion as Mr Tucker suggested.

Top man!

Would be great if you could knock up a few things and post them, even if it's just for an audio demo.

Appreciate the assistance :)

Although this isn't really my thing style wise, I really like how different it is, good to hear something fresh that doesn't sound like it's all been done before!

I made a better one using Izotope but then tried to get rid of all 3rd party plugins and keep it simple so this is a bit shit: http://www.filedropper.com/djjamie

Some tutorials here:

Basically 808 bass > distort / saturate > bounce > repeat

Excellent stuff, thank you for taking the time to do that.

I brought Razor ages ago when it was on sale, never really explored the possibilities of it though. This weekend I'm going to give these suggestions a go and hopefully post something up.

No probs. I'm with Malcolm on this, I think there's an infinite range of possibilities even with free softsynths so might as well get stuck in

This is spot on.

Also on the Rap bassline there's a tiny amount of lfo modulating the pitch which gives it that wobbly effect. I'll post some samples tonight.

Everything on SoundClown streams at 128; everything above it is converted or transcoded as applicable, files that go in at 128 aren't modified.

This choon is tidy, anyways. Seriously lacking in top end, but a nice vibe/selection of sounds. Kick is a teensy bit on the 'big' side. Retro-tinged but not an old skool pastiche; I wish more mofos went this way with their music.

lol I knew that but didnt even give it a thought.

It's not mixed yet but you're right, defo needs some top end, and I did wonder about that kick but I've only really had it on headphones loud so far. Thanks for the feedback, useful.

^Feeling that - kick sounds fine my end.

Really like all the sounds and vibes, only thing is the kick on the breakdown, feels too clean imo - I'd layer something grittier over the top to give it more character.

Nice tune.

Any of you guys got tips on external sound cards. Looking at getting one, nothing OTT, 2in 2out.

I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and it does everything I need.

Not sure if it's still the current model but something like that should give you all the ins/outs you need if you're mostly using software and maybe want to plug in the occasional mic / guitar or something.
