Loads of hard work in the digital realm.

Have you ever tried making these sounds in an Emu?

I've been doing stuff fully "in the box". Think I prefer that way at the moment, would rather learn the software first and play with outboard gear once I've got better. I'm a bit funny about this though, I've never believed the "outboard/analog is best" hype.

If you ever get a chance to have a go on an Emu, just get a standard 808 kick, resample it with the volume whacked up all the way in the EMU then you'll see why certain people swear by certain pieces of kit.

That's all I'm saying.

I couldn't believe my ears when I tried it.

Do you mean like this - or something subbier?

Just tried this. Ran an 808 into Izotope Ozone. Got the same sort of tone within a couple of minutes, and there are a million and one possibilities with that approach - because you can change the characteristics of the filter, convolution, distortion, saturation etc. all independently. No noise floor or cables to mess about with either

Quite funny with Optical saying he doesn't use compression, then immediately describes how he does use compression by normalizing it. Reassuring that the pros get confused too

He's talking about normalising it in the Emu. Which is the effect that Dillinja gets with that 808 kick.

I don't know how it does it, but it's not something I've been able to replicate in software without loads of resampling.

If I had the space, I'd buy one just to run stuff through those converters.

Sure but it increases the average volume and reduces the dynamic range by slicing off the peaks, that's compression in my view.

Ableton have put some analog modelling stuff in the latest updates. Filters rather than compression/limiting but looks interesting.

Yes Joe! Loving that. Reese sounds sick IMO.

Here's an EP I made about 2 years ago that's finally seen the light of day, if anyone's interested: https://soundcloud.com/evade-dnb/sets/synaesthesia

Oversight, personal opinion but I reckon a few bars with some f the saw waves distorted and a few bars with the whole lot eq'd down at the high end would work for some variation. Nice anyway
