Well, here's my most recent effort. I was after that neurofunk growl/distortion but it just sounds distorted tbh.

Any feedback would be really appreciated, I know the whole thing is a bit ropey but if there are any specific bits that jump out for criticism I'd be very grateful.

Also, I made this on 15" P.A speakers, not ideal obviously. It actually sounds alright through them but any other device it sounds really bad.

I’ve just listened on my iPhone, sounds alright tbh, better than a lot of the stuff new producers post.

My advice would be stay away from forums for advice, most people on here are at the demo stage (me included). You probably don’t want to be taking advice from a bunch of 40 year old failed dnb producers :).

But my feedback would be, put more variation in, it sounds like the same loop rolling out (apart from the breakdown). Bear in mind that I may not know what I’m talking about as I don’t like drum and bass any more..

Thanks Colin, appreciated.

To be honest, this is the first time I've sought advice on production (online or otherwise) as I just do it for a bit of a laugh and no one ever hears the tunes. I know plenty of producers, but their music chat goes completely over my head so I don't even ask them and they are super anal with even minor details which I lose interest in very quickly.

Yeah it is pretty much the same loop tbh slight variation at end of 16bars, I'm a bit lazy lol and I worry that I will somehow FUBAR it by editing too much!

I also don't enjoy drum and bass as much as I used to, I'm constantly surrounded by bottom of the barrel throwaway jump-up and shouty MCs which leaves me slightly bitter tbh. There's great dnb still out there but it doesn't get a look in. On a tangent now but we had a jump up crew do a guest show last week and there were 6500 people locked on, but the show the day before was all credible proper dnb and barely even got a missed call on the studio line. The kids actually want throwaway shit now... yeah, unnecessary rant but I'm wired lol.

No probs.

I don’t mind the jump up, they’ve got a community where loads of people meet up, go out to raves and are constantly trying to outdo each other with their new tracks in a friendly competition. That is what drew most of us here to this music back in the 90’s.

You’ll hear scene veterans reminiscing about Music House, Blue Note and bemoaning the fact people don’t meet up anymore, when you’ve got a bunch of kids doing exactly that with current drum and bass and they don’t seem to have noticed.

Yeah man, don't get me wrong, I played only jump up for years and years and there's still no other sub-genre that gives me that feeling when its done right. And it's the jump up guys that are keen for the shows several times a week. It's just a shame the innovation has all but disappeared from the tunes.

I started making a Krust ripoff but realised it wasn't really very jungle or summery. It was also shit.

I like this, I'm glad something in your house works.

This has a great 96 feel to it, I quite like the subtle Amen that comes in towards the end and the overiding break is awesome.

Any tutorials or guides about online for total mongs at production?.

Thought it might be fun to try and make some music so downloaded a shady copy of fruity loops (thought I'd see if I got 'into' it before spending dollar on something I might not enjoy), but I'm struggling with it.

I know fruity is for babies and fraggles but don't wanna pull the trigger on buying reason or Cubase or whatever people use till I know what the fuck I'm doing.

Should I be making the bass first then drums, or vice versa.

Tbh I'm fucking clueless, made many drum loops, many nice bass riffs but none that compliment each other.

Give up or front the cash for a proper production software?

Depends on how patient you are and how much you want to get good at it.

At first I found that the ideas bit was easier, getting something sounding good takes time/work/going through tutorials as Domino says above.

If you use breaks and bass only, it's much harder to get a clean sound as most breaks will take up a large chunk of the frequency spectrum, and your mix is more likely to sound muddy/flat.

Try simpler drum machine hits and bass, use panning more, work out from tutorials how to use equalisation to make sure kick drums and basslines don't clash, snares with riffs etc

Also arrangement and structure is important, listening to your favourite tunes, working out how they are built, getting the right number of bars for each section of song needs to be a starting point, like 32 bar intros, 64 bar main drops etc...

Once you can build a song, even though it sounds shit at first, this will give you confidence to take it to the next level. Getting a really good sound takes some people years, if they ever manage it...

Need some Ableton help... I've got a project that won't load and I've found the track that's causing the problem but I can't see what VST is on it. Anyone know of a way without loading the track? If I load the track everything crashes
