The balls to take the South African scrum on for the win instead of going for a guaranteed draw, outstanding

^ Agreed, I was certain they would just take the draw, but no. Amazing.

I've got them in my sweepstake at work, they are going to win the world cup of rugby.

That Japan game was incredible, one of the best I've seen in years. Even the draw would have been a massive achievement but they knew they had SA on the ropes - still took balls of steel to go for the try at the end.

Japan, incredible, still finding it hard to believe. Amazing scenes.

Argies provided a great first-up hit out for the ABs, they played really well. We're such a different proposition in the last quarter of games.

Wales and Ireland looked solid, England pretty lacklustre, bit one-dimensional. Burgess was quality off the bench.

Argentina vs. NZ was a great game. Argentina's defence for 60 minutes was absolutely brutal, although the AB attack looked a bit hesitant and predictable it must be said. If someone is going to beat NZ at this cup it will be by playing the sort of game Argentina did today, only they'll need to execute better than the Argies did on attack. They could've had a couple more tries in the first half.

The bench proved the difference between the two teams, once Creevy and the rest of the Argentinian starting forwards were off they dropped away completely, whereas Faumuina, Crockett and Vito helped the ABs in a big way and really upped the intensity.

Watched the whole SA vs. Japan game last night, absolutely incredible!

other than the first 10 minutes and the whole injuries bullshit, Wales looked decent. Uruguay played very well considering they're nearly all amateurs.

Argentina looked pretty good as well, they certainly won't be any pushover if they get out of the group stage.
England game was pretty uninspiring all round, terrible refereeing and some basic errors that any team better than Fiji would have punished them for.

I love how everyone else's off colour performance is due to the plucky opposition but England's bonus point securing victory over the No.8 team in the world who are no mugs and have some top quality players playing all across Europe was basically the worst game of the weekend.

The Fijians played well, The England bench made the difference - very similar to the AB game really.

And if Wales try flinging it about off first and second phase ball against England or Australia they will be 20 points down by halftime off all the turnovers they will concede.

I'm not disputing any of that, the Fijians did play well. It was the dullest game of the weekend though, mainly down to the ref and his TMO fetish, although that looks like being a big theme of this WC. Wayne Barnes showed how it should be used in the NZ game yesterday so the whole thing flowed much better.

If England try flinging it about with lines that flat against Australia or Wales, they'll get smashed every time.

Since I kinda got into Cricket over the summer I thought I'd give Rugby another go - not watched any Rugby in a couple of years. I watched that game and was bored to death with the amount of time the ref stopped the game to refer to the TMO.

I guess I should have watched Japan / South Africa instead.

It's annoying as they're constantly bringing in these initiatives to make the game faster and have more incentives to score tries, but refs are now too gutless to make any decisions themselves without tv analysis.

What's the story with the coverage anyway? ITV is so crap - have the BBC got the knockout stages or something?

I thought Rugby refs were supposed to be the second coming compared to football refs?

I know a lot of people support video technology for football - for all sorts from offsides to fouls. I'm dead against it for exactly the same reason. It slows the game down so much.

Only in the sense that they don't take any back chat and are actually respected by the players. A good ref (Wayne Barnes, Nigel Owens etc) can lift a whole game. I agree with you, video reffing is fucking shit.

@Snakewad, i thought ITV have it all?

The ABs getting marched back 10 for too much chat last night was a joy to see.

the guy doing the new zealand game yesterday used TMO really well i thought...friday and saturday's games were rife with massive periods of waiting around for decisions though. in theory, it could work really well, and wouldn't disrupt football either if they incorporated it.

Yeah, Barnes did a great job of asking the TMO to look at things whilst the ball was still in play, rather than stopping everything and waiting.

Was nice to see McCaw get what he should in most games too...

I was surprised to hear that stat that McCaw has only been yellow carded in 3 games out of 143
