I always chuckle when I remember The Sajid's comments on how ticket touts are "classic entrepreneurs" who provide a valuable service for people who don't manage to get tickets.

That was a culture secretary with his finger on the pulse!

The gift that keeps on giving. Thank god for our compassion in helping his father escape religious persecution.

What would you prefer? His son is arrested before he's guilty of any crime?

It's not like Abu Hamza is still running wild on our streets either. He's in prison.

It's hardly a convincing argument for abandoning a compassionate approach to asylum seekers, if that was the implication.

Instead, the £30,000-a-year minimum salary threshold that is already imposed on non-EU workers will also apply to migrants from the EU27, although there may be further consultation about how the system will operate.

Are nurses considered to be skilled or non-skilled? - If it's the former, then the NHS is well and truly fucked

Low-skilled. It's based on salary, not actual skill.... obviously.

I have figured this out, Nurses are not considered low-skilled, they have been added to the 'shortage occupation list' which means they are currently exempt from the legislation along with a few other occupations such as other medical staff roles, certain engineering roles and a few specialist software developers roles.  Assuming of course the new legislation mirrors the current non-EEA rules

Where does it say this? Got a link?

Please provide references that adherences to Randianism do not worship the market but worship big business itself.

Yet the current context is that we have massive labour shortages in these so-called low-skilled areas of work.

While I don't disagree, some balance is required. If the positions aren't being filled, maybe the option is to increase the rates being offered for those positions, or invest in training up more people with those skill sets. Just importing people is a ticking time bomb, because the imports get old and need their own care and support at some point, and capitalising on their desperation by keeping rates low and underpaying them is simply not fair.

It also means we're incentivised to keep other countries poor, because that way we have a ready and willing pool of resource to draw from, and those countries end up losing the doctors they have paid to train up... which doesn't exactly leave them in a good position.

Did anyone watch that Yanis Varoufakis video I posted? Be interested to hear peoples thoughts...

Javid was a remainer but is doing a Theresa May style moonwalk. That’s my main beef with him, not him wanting to stop random people with no identifiers breaking into the country.

I did actually mention this point in my full post, but you have edited it out. It is almost certainly a more attractive solution to the labour shortages we have, but at present it's hugely unlikely we'll see any level of investment or salary incentive to get British people in these jobs, because Brexit and because austerity.

The government is simultaneously committed to wage freezes, no public sector investment and no low-income migration. It's utterly irrational.

I will check that Varoufakis vid soon. I like the cut of his jib.

The Saj in talks to send the dinghy firm straight back to France. That will be the fastest and long term more humane way to nip this in the bud.

I certainly don't trust this government to solve an apparent crisis in cross-channel shipping. These so-called asylum seekers are actually just fast food being shipped over by Seaborne Freight.

Sorry m9, wasn't intentional. I was making it as a general point rather than picking holes in your post, your outlook always seems balanced so I wouldn't be trying to find holes in your argument anyways tbh

The Seaborne Ferry scam is one of the most concerning failures yet.
After the trains, the Gatwick drones and now this contract going to a party donor affiliate Grayling just basically said go suck your mums, cos ain’t saying sorry for shit lol

Thanks for this. Wasn't trying to doubt you, I genuinely wanted to see how the exception worked.

It should be noted though that the shortage occupation list is pretty small. There are plenty of roles in the UK, especially low-salary roles, that are not on the list, for which there is a shortage in labour.

Also, there is a limit to how many Tier 2 visas can be granted per-year. As remember last year we reached the limit and May refused for quite a while to grant any more despite the ongoing shortage of nurses.

So yeah it's encouraging that the nonsense "low-skilled" restriction won't apply to nurses and some other NHS roles, but it's still a pretty shit system and obvious flaws in claiming that anyone earning less than £30k is low-skilled. FFS criminal barristers often earn less than £30k.
