I’m also in the market for a decent laptop for boring office work. Thinking i5 8gb 256gb sdd. Budget up to £700. Seems to be lots of choice but I have no idea what to get/avoid?

Can't be hard to choose a laptop if it's not for gaming, just get one with an i5, 8GB Ram, SSD. Hotukdeals.com is decent for finding budget laptops.

I like the dell XPS 13. My Dell has been annoying me today though so I kinda say this reluctantly.

MacBook / macbook airs are good. Probably a bit over budget though.

I know fuck all about laptops, missus is after a new one for approx £300.  Happy to go refurbished etc.  Any tips?

Get one with a smaller SSD rather than a larger mechanical.

err, you can buy dodgy keys - like these - from hundreds of places cheaper. even ebay, for a couple of quid. they'll work initially, but could be deactivated by MS at some point. complete pot luck. most are nicked OEM keys or IT people selling company keys on the side.

no way they are direct from microsoft at that price. they'll be oem keys. not that MS really give a shit about personal use; they only really clamp down on businesses.

My computer powers on but doesn't boot windows and won't even get to the bios. It happened after I moved it to a different room. any ideas? I guess I need to try unplugging everything but I can't be arsed. At first I could get into the bios but now I just get a blank screen and my keyboard doesn't light up.

I bought one for my spare laptop and it worked like a charm.

well yeah, of course. but it's no more legit than a £2 key off ebay, which will also work.

Unplug and replug everything first.  There's no shortcut on that...

Maybe the motherboard battery might have come loose, take it out and put it back. It'll look like a watch battery but larger

When I turn my PC on it turns itself off again, then on, off etc forever, has my power supply failed or something?

So it's actually staying on now but not showing anything on the monitor and the keyboard isn't coming on. Don't see how I can do anything if I can't even get into the bios. Had nothing but hassle from this thing recently, it's when there's no display that I run out of ideas.

It's more than likely the PSU so check that first. Do you have another?

Anyone getting one of the new Nvidia GPUs announced today? This ray tracing stuff does look impressive, just want to see some frame rate comparisons to decide which one I want
