PC thread.

For gaming, parts, advice etc etc..

Enough complaining in the normal Gaming thread so thought I'd start a new one.

As I've mentioned in said other thread I'm having dilemma's with new parts to buy. This clusterfuck just got worse today when I noticed my MOBO doesn't support SLI, only CrossFire. This comes after all my plans have revolved around using Nvidia GPUs. I have a MSI Z87-G41-PCMate MOBO, suggestions for similar ones that will support SLI?

Anyone still playing DayZ also?

Well, if you were set on using nVidia, you should have checked the mobo would work in SLI...

Now that is the 'told you so' over and done with, you have a few options;

1.  Get a new Mobo

2.  Don't worry too much about running 2 GPUS, and get a single GTX 9x0 GPU which will run pretty much any game at the moment, especially with the CPU you must have plugged into a Z87 board (what CPU is it?)

I have a single Gigabyte 980 card which is hench and definitely heavy enough for gaming (I keep topping it out for 3D work but that is another issue, which I may address if and when the 8GB versions come out)

Re: PC thread. 2015/01/06 16:10:46 (permalink)
I bought the PC from a friend for an absolute steal so didn't get any input into the parts inside it, currently in the process of upgrading it and it only just clocked with me that I should check if it is SLI compatible..

I could get a new Mobo or I could forget Nvidia and stick with AMD, or as you said run one decent GTX for the time. Currently have an Intel Core i5 4670K, just ordered a H100i cooling system for it so I can overclock.

What I would do;

-Forget overclocking for now, until you have built a solid system and wrung every last drop out of your wallet, buying solid, reliable parts.  You don't need to overclock that to play most games.  Worry about that later.

-Get a single high end nVidia GTX 9x0 GPU.  The 970 is a beast and is about 60% of the cost of a 980.  Loads of gamers are running very sick rigs with single 970s in there.  You will be able to plug this straight into your mobo and get going.

-Later on if you still want to SLI, you can upgrade / crossgrade the mobo to another Z87, or upgrade to X99 / a hench i7 5xxx CPU / DDR4 when the prices come down.

Honestly though, with a 970 plugged into that set up you have, you will get none / hardly any performance issues, as the i5 4670k is definitely still ace and not a bottle neck.

What GPU have you got in there at the moment?

Cheers for the advice. I'll probably do something along those lines for now tbh and save up for a new build when prices start to drop.

Currently running a 2GB MSI Radeon R7 260X, really underpowered but it's a trooper

Re: PC thread. 2015/01/06 16:33:26 (permalink)
You could still get some cash for that on eBay or whatever is the most popular market site where you are.

Max out the RAM (which on a Z87 board is not too expensive), and get a GTX 970 and you won't need to build a new rig, realistically, for a very long time.

I honestly was planning to SLI another 980 into this machine when I first started planning it, but when I used 'just' a single 980, it was absolute fire, so I quickly forgot about spending another silly amount of money on a gaming GPU and got on with using the fucker.

Already got 4x4gb Corsair Vengeance in it, will be selling anything that comes off it on the 'bay, looking there now it seems I could probably get 70-80 for the GPU at the lowest.

So you're going to come and complain in this thread too?

I'm also in need of an SSD, annoyingly I'll have to reinstall my OS and games on it but it'll be worth it.

I never really complained about the PC talk, and I'm merely pointing out how gay calling e-bay 'the 'bay' is.

80 quid takes a chunk out the cost of a 970, for sure.

16gb RAM is fine for your setup.

SSD; yeah, Crucial or Samsung for that.  Don't go any cheaper or less known than those two.

I have a 250GB as my OS, and still have loads of space on it.

As for reinstalling; nope - get Acronis software and you can clone everything straight across, once you have fine tuned everything on your OS drive down to fit.  I did exactly that, and have had no issues whatsover.  Really easy to clone using Acronis.

I didn't even think of using Acronis even though I use it most days at work. Nice one.

Yeah, I used cloning software years ago, and was a bit skeptical about it, as it was hit and miss back in the day, but this worked really well (the SSD boots fine every single day, and has done for the last 4 months with no issue)

Unless you have been careful, you will need to strip down your OS drive before you clone it over, of course, but that is a pretty good purging exercise and gets you to cut down on the tonnes of shit you inevitably have shoved into your file system

I didn't say only Samsung or Crucial. I said not to go cheaper or less known than those two. I would put Sandisk on their level, definitely.

Thread is pointless, seeing as there's only about 3 of us on here with any actual clue about hardware.

Annoying the peasants and closet nerds in the gaming/console thread is much more fun, specially now there leader is 1400p gaming and calling them all poors and peasants.

He means thats about the benchmark for SSD to aim at. Anyway Intel are the best SSD manufacture. By a longshot. Smasung are very MEHHHHH of late, specially with the issues the EVO had until the firmware update that went out before xmas. Crucial are better imo. Kingston stuff was really good aswell rebranded INTEL gear.

Anyway Back to the poors and peasants thread for this kinda talk and speculation :P

Anyway; you can't say that Samsung are Meh, because of an issue they had, and then fixed with their SSDs.  What makes you say that Intel are the best SSD?  Is this from first hand experience of torture testing all of the ones you list, or are you going by some other data (and if so, what data?)

Also, in what way are Crucial better than Samsung?  What are you basing this on?  What makes Intel better 'by a long shot'?

Sick mate. I've got one of those in my rig at work. It is the longest GPU in the world so you might have to take out some drive bays or whatever. It is going to allow some pretty heavy graphic work for you.

How much did you get it for?
