it's a shame they've reached the acceptance and reflection stage already. i'd hoped they still had some pain left for when burnley finish above them by winning at the emirates in a few weeks.

I barely managed a sigh watching Newcastle outclass us yesterday. Wall to wall apathy from the fans to the players to the owner.

Atleti at home is going to to be proper kick up the arse, either to galvanise the fans and reignite some interest or put the final nail in Wenger’s coffin.

Tbf the league is over. You got that feeling watching the Newcastle Arsenal game. Players got an eye on the World Cup too.

Title done
Champs league done
Europa spots done (Burnley get in as long as Southampton don’t win the FA Cup)
Relegation pretty much done barring a minor miracle
Oh wait, the battle for 2nd is on 🙄

What the actual fuck is this monstrosity?

Liquidate.

Scratch behind all that gloss... there used to be a football club there.

"City" fans where all gushing on the BBC this morning. I bet they've not felt joy like that since Stockport got promoted to league one in 97.

One thing that did strike me watching Jonjo Shelvey run rings round us was that Benitez might be the ideal Wenger replacement if/when he goes.

Proven track record of getting unbalanced squads to punch above their weight, knows his way around a top flight club and one of the few managers who wouldn’t be daunted by the baggage whatsoever.

Benitez is still a top manager imo. Has been undone by supporters who think their club is above him in the past though.

Not with Arsenal's current squad IMO.
Will take at least a year to clear out the dross and get the players he wants.

A coach who is renowned for getting teams hyper-organised and doesn't take any shit or mollycoddle half-arsed passengers is exactly what Arsenal need right now.

It's not as if we're even playing exciting stuff as it is so there wouldn't be any moaning about functional football either. Rafa IN.

I wouldn’t call Terry a half-arsed passenger and he completely sidelined him.

He could hardly run and was keeping better players out of the side because of his ego/reputation. Rafa didn't give a fuck. Captain. Leader. Legend. Benched.

The same player who made 35 appearances and won the league in the following season. Other than that, yeah totally washed up.

Fair dues, but there's no denying he was on his way out and Rafa knew it, that's part of the reason the Chelsea fans hated him so much.

Even in that title winning season he sat out a lot of the big games and kept getting caught out for pace as I remember it. You don't drop down a league to play for the Villa unless you absolutely have to.

It sounds like you’re thinking of last season. This was 14-15, when Jose returned.

I do like Benítez now anyway, I’m not sure he would be right guy to turn Arsenal around though.

He's still fucking sick. No way should he have been dropped. And he had plenty of Premier League offers.

One criticism is that he seems a bit injury prone...but he is still one hell of a player and that is probably to be expected  given his age and how he plays... Still got a season or 2 in him for sure

Nope. He started every single game that season (playing every minute of the season) and played to a high level. He went to Villa cos he didn’t want to play against Chelsea.

So bent this. Just play against your old team ffs. I can appreciate players not celebrating against former teams when scoring (but unless your a JT style one man club, this is shit too), but not even playing against them is pathetic.

Yeah, no Chelsea fan would’ve begrudged it.

He’d have got a good reception. There’s a possibility Villa will come up anyway.

Benitez probably dropped Comrade Terry because he didn't want him uniting the exploited and underpaid workers against yet another cruel and brutally oppressive managerial regime.

I'm not sure that's even true about him not wanting to play against Chelsea because now it sounds like he will only sign a new contract if we go up

Exactly. His name being read out for Villa would get a bigger cheer from the Bridge crowd than Chelsea scoring.
He's an emotional blouse isnt he? He'd probably start blubbering before the first whilstle goes. Twat.

I stand corrected. Dreamworld had it right, I’d skipped ahead to his “kick the ball into touch and give me a guard of honour” farewell tour season and totally forgotten about his admittedly impressive post-Benitez swansong

I still rate Rafa for having the balls to step in there and give zero fucks about legend status or what the fans thought about him and just get on with it though. Again, exactly what Arsenal need post-Wenger.

I'd say it's more because he knew he would play every game and be captain rather than a squad player for a Premier League team

That’s what he said and despite Premier League interest, he was only looking for Championship clubs (Birmingham nearly got him) so I don’t see why it wouldn’t be true.
