I really don't get the hype.
Anyone care to explain?

When he's good, he's brilliant. Can't link at the minute, but have a listen to 'Maad City'

i think section 80 and good kid, maad city are both great albums

cartoons & cereal is the rawest rap single for years

he's not for everyone...his voice does annoy me at times...but he's one of the most interesting, creative artists in hip-hop at the moment

p.s. yeah the joell ortiz freestyle is big

Jesus! I still remember buying that feeling like a proper G because it had the Parental Advisory sticker on it!

Music that has stood the test of time. How can anyone resist those funky basslines?

Oh for the love of God. I take it most of the hype is by kids. Take them back 10-25 years ago and they'd all combust lol.

^^ that.

It's because expectations have been slowly moved downwards. A generation that thinks lil wayne is Super Lyrical is in trouble

Damn kids and their music

What's worse is when people from our generation who know all the old stuff get sucked into this hype as well. Having said that, I like Kendrick but don't think this particular verse is amazing.

I think it's pretty meh, but I try and stay out of popular music because it just reminds me I'm getting old.

I got Snoop Doggy Dogg's album on my 9th birthday and listened to all that kind of stuff in my formative years, I had to put up with my stepdad telling me how shit that music was as it sampled all the stuff he listened to when he was in his formative years.

Circle of life etc.

don't get it at all. verse is nice enough, but everyone acting like he just called out all those other mcs.

as far as i can tell, he actually said he likes those guys but wants to be better than them all. so fucking what?

Yeah but when we were younger the music WAS bett.... oh... wait.

I'm well aware I say exactly the same things my Dad used to say when I'm bemoaning music these days.

Agreed, if any "beef" develops out of this it will be pathetic.

Exactly. I mean maybe we're predisposed to defend the music that you listened to when you were in a certain age bracket. Or maybe, objectively, things are becoming perpetually bland. I mean, at some point the kids that rate this tune and other shit pop music will be whinging at their kids for listening to shit music, and what the fuck will that sound like?

The whole thing blows my tiny mind.

More importantly what were you listening to doggystyle for at nine years old? That album is frikking filthy.

That this bothers me tells me I'm getting old.

Or maybe, just throwing this out there, there's something about this verse that might have deservedly made everyone's ears prick up?

It's not just people's ears pricking up though is it, it's people who've been around hip-hop since it's infancy trying to claim K dot reinvented the wheel and changed the face of rapping forever. He hasn't. He just went in reasonably hard over some any beat. As I said before, I like most of Kendick's stuff and it's nice to see him get some props, but hip-hop isn't going to be significantly different this time next year just because he had the best verse on a Big Sean tune.

"Rapper expresses confidence in own abilities relative to abilities of other rappers"
