[OT] Photoshop/Graphics/Photo chaps - 14/8/2012 1:53:23 PM

Afternoon. Works been slow over the last few months so ive had my ear to the ground and been toying with the idea of getting a permanent position in the industry. Self employment is nice but i miss a regular pay cheque.

Anyway, this things come up and they require a Photoshop operator. Im on it all day every day pretty much so that's safe. In the job description it say 'Advance Photoshop re-touching' Now excuse my ignorance but at what point does it become advance re-touching?

I'm just wondering if anyone could give me some examples of functions an processes that would be deemed advance as id like to know where i stand. Im going for it regardless but id like to know how deep the water is before i get into it.

Thanks in advance.

in CAD i'd class myself as advanced as i've been at it 7 years.
I'm still mainly self taught tho. I've not got any certificates, just experience and examples of my work.

to me, in the context you just wrote it says, they want someone who can essentially get on with it and do a good job. as opposed to trainee (needs showing and teaching) or intermediate (generally ok, but may need some assistance)

thats my opinion anyway, could be wrong.

that's what i'd say too, that they want someone who can give them what they ask for without them having to hold your hand through it.

'advanced photohop re-touching' tends to be based around touching up people/faces i think? like removing blotches, applying digital make-up/hair colour, making people look skinnier etc.

Cool man, that sounds about right. I just wasn't sure if it was referring to a specific set of skills that may be beyond my depth of knowledge in the system. I guess i wont really know until i sit down with them and see what level they're at and what they want doing.

I can clean a photo up but applying digital make-up/hair color is not something i have ever had to do : /

I'll get hunting for tutorials. Cheers dude.

sounds about right to me. Only the employers themselves know what they deem to be 'advanced' i guess, if there's a set of rules as to what is classed as beginner, intermediate, advanced etc then ive never come across them It might be worth just having a google of 'advanced photoshop tutorials' or something and seeing what sort of thing comes up though.

I'd say it means you need to be able to process photos to a professional standard and also do some of the complex stuff if need be. E.G. removing large portions of the photo or adding in shizzle with the clone tool or bits of other photos.

How good are you at scary man chops bascially?

My chopping skills are relatively tight Not sure they could be classed as advanced though.

We really need some advice and examples from Mr C in here. His mastery of digital image editing is widely accepted as second to none.

Anyone know if there's a specific technical term for the design of book and magazine covers? Is it just editorial design?

Its that as well but that applies to a much wider range of jobs. Cover Design definitely specifies what im on about.

Books and magazine covers are a massively different kettle of fish, IMO.

Safe Zuko, not seen you on for a while. Hope you're good.

How so? It would still be classed as layout work, no?
