No it doesn't. It says that's a politically correct stereotype. Kind of an ideal. Detached house, professional looking, well educated, happy, multicultural.
It then says that there aren't many people living this way. Which is true. Most people got shit degrees that cost loads, can't get a 'proper' or 'graduate' job, and don't live in detached houses with their happy multicultural families.
Most?
Yeah. Most people don't live this way. If this was meant to be a depiction of the modern British family it was inaccurate. Is what the guy from the Daily Mail is saying.
I didn't notice this. I did like the small but noticeable minority of 19th century industrialists and capitalists of African descent however. I know Britain was a progressive place but had no idea how far this went! Also liked how on the float that represented the first wave of immigration from the colonies they didn't dare actually stick anyone who looked like a migrant on the boat.
Before anyone else phones up to moan about what the Daily Mail wrote about something they should remember the wise words of Noam Chomsky:
'If we don't believe in freedom of speech for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all.'
lol no one's saying they should be banned from saying it? We're exercising our freedom of speech to point out that it's a cynical, poorly thought out attempt at 'journalism'. I don't know why you're trying to defend a shit bit of writing for the sake of it.
People seemed to be getting a bit steamed up over what proved to be a misreading of a certain line in a Daily Mail article. I pointed out that the line quoted didn't say what some people thought it did and therefore there was no need to be offended.
I know what we can do, let's pay tribute to the victims of 7/7 by having a Muslim father and son have a warm embrace to show how forgiving and diverse we are as a nation. Never mind that these 4 guys were either born here or were British citizens. We're sorry for upsetting you, we tried to integrate you into our society, offer you a better education a chance to raise a family and lead a normal life. We're British, we're sorry.......
Yeah because we need to forgive all Muslims for what those 4 terrorists did don't we. Because they're all guilty too, right?
You're an idiot. I bet you think all Irish people are in the IRA.
The majority are decent, behind closed doors there are many who still hate us.
I would have preferred to see the victims honoured or even use that segment to bring out the survivors.
LOL at anyone who thinks the entire culture of this country isn't based on borrowing from others.
Hold tight the 100% pure British guys drinking European lager all night followed by a bastardised Indian, Italian, Chinese or Turkish takeaway.
There's very few popular things in this country which aren't either borrowed, stolen, influenced or adapted from other cultures.
Borrowed? So in your opinion Mod X is there any such thing as britishness? Or is being British just something cooked up by right wing nutters? Because if there aren't any uniquely British charcteristics then we are even more pathetic than I thought. I think we have lots of distinctive traits. Stoicism, stuborness, humour, a general apathy towards fanaticals and we invented football.
It is quite a British trait that we do incorporate those aspects of other cultures which we enjoy and, quite often, adapt them slightly to better suit ourselves. My point is that most aspects of our day to day lives involve adaptions of, or incorporations of elements of other cultures. Look at for example Jungle, a music someone else in this thread claimed was a truly British creation...it came from taking elements of various existing genres of most, many of them from other countries, and forming them together to create something new. This creation also reflected the multicultural make-up of the youth (at the time) of our country. I believe as a national entity, we are great remixers if you will, we take things, change them to our own tastes and embrace them as our own.
There's certainly behavioural traits which are thought of as typically British and I would agree with those but my point was claiming that British culture is some pure entity untouched by the outside world is frankly, ridiculous. I say that, drinking a cup of tea, a typically British activity, tea being a substance imported to this country from India and China primarily. In fact, most of Europe were drinking tea way before the British and, coffee was already a popular drink in England before tea was imported on a large scale.
Even the St. George's Cross, the flag waved by many a patriotic football fan, is in fact borrowed, from Genoa because it afforded us protection from pirates.

Them and us? Please elaborate because I don't want to misunderstand what you mean by that and get into an unnecessary argument but it seems like you're suggesting that you're either British or a Muslim.
My issue is with religion and integration. How many forum members have close relations with devout Muslims or Jews? Even if they are born here they don't adopt or respect our western values, generally they mingle in their own circle and very rarely mix outside of that. They despise our way of life, I'm not saying they want us all dead but they certainly don't want to live amongst us. If I were to immigrate to a middle eastern country I would respect their culture as I do when visiting on holiday.
Actually successful religions often meld with ethnicity to make them stronger. Can't really back out of being a sikh can you? Also you seem to believe that only devout muslims or jews dont 'mingle' with the host population. If you look at the intermarrying figures as a guide I think you'll find that virtually all of them (that don't want to be ostracised from their community) stay separate. They are both strong cultures (so to speak) and if we genuinely insisted on assimilation that would be like asking them to stop existing. Aint gonna happen.
Incidentally I've talked to alot of pretty far out muslims over the years and I've never had the feeling they despise us. We're more like sinners that could be saved. I think their end game is peaceful conversion...

A Muslim couldn't/wouldn't marry outside of their own religion. A neighbour of mine married a white girl who had to convert first.
This isn't a Muslim country & I don't want or need to be saved. I'd be happy if they could respect that and carry on as they are.

You can't depict modern Britain using just a family image anyway, it's not possible. It implies things though.
Even if they are born here they don't adopt or respect our western values
So you are saying that the wonderful British society can't make room so these people can adjust to your standards. So its actually british society with its unadjustable nature's fault and not the foreigners?
If you changed the o in adopt to an a you would appear a lot smarter and might give the impression you understood at least part of the principle.

Well I'd say multiculturalism is nothing new, anybody who has read a history book knows this and because we on this island are mostly thinking human beings we have of course borrowed and shared ideas with other human beings, usually through organized and violent exchanges. I just cringe a bit at left wingers who seem to enjoy taking apart everything 'British' until the term itself begins to lose any meaning to it at all. I don't know why the fuck I am even putting the word into quotation marks. I don't do it with Japanese, Jamaican, Cypriot or any other small island people so i'm going to blooming well stop doing it with British.
Not sure if anyone has pointed out that whilst some of these rightwingers are utter penises, when they talk of 'multiculturalism' there are two readings of that word.
One is the melting pot, various cultures combining to form this constantly evolving, dynamic 'British' culture.
The other is a society with multiple distinct cultures supposedly living in peace with one another (lol). This is the idea that has led to distinct muslim communities being separate and apart from white communities in towns like Oldham and Bradford. It's the same thing that happened in Belfast (although you can't blame centuries of prejudice on lefties). Some lefties like it, some rightwingers like it and there are some cultures that have a long history of maintaining their identity no matter what; judaism and islam are two examples of this.

My point is that to claim Britishness without accepting that it includes the incorporation of foreign elements is ridiculous. From the St. George's Cross to stereotypically British activities such as drinking tea, none of these would exist or be possible without borrowing from other cultures. Right wing people banging on about 'forrins comin' over 'ere' whilst drinking Belgian beer, driving Japanese or German cars, drinking tea from China or India, the list could go on for a very long time, is idiotic. Even the origins of our language come from elsewhere FFS. Acting like Britain is some virginal untouched land suddenly under threat from foreign influence is up there with Father Christmas and the Easter Bunny in terms of believability.
because its nice while council tax and rate payers of London have paid for a lot of the thing, that the rest of the UK even got a mention. so smile says thanks, enjoy the sport and shut up. in general not you.
I love this. The UK has helped regenerate Stratford so Londoners can bask in all its glory and you say we are the ones that should be thankful, lol do me a favour.
I thought it was a wonderful opening ceremony, but given that it was for the Olympic Games - could more not have been made of the fact that this is the cradle of modern sport?
We did industrialise the world, we do have a universal health service but what about all the sports that we invented that are in this games?

the UK? it was London council taxes that were used.
and redboy, 'they' by which i assume you mean the looney lefties, did not choose the children. our 7 greastest olympians (most of whom are from 'diverse backgrounds') selected them.
