usually reverb plugs I've found. I don't think it's that they're badly programmed I think it's probably user error.

How about using some sort of tape emulator? Maybe thats a good option to do this overdrive the dat tape and clipping technique's mentioned.

Not read the thread but a tape saturation plugin would in no way sound like clipping the input of a DAT.

DAT is digital.

Reverbs have a pre delay option some times, maybe/possibly that.

Some plugs do not accurately work with automatic delay compensation.... You can get round this but using a sample delay of some description and adjusting it until the sound locks in phase.

Ok, but could still be a nice way of doing some sort of limiting effect.
Wonder if just clipping the channel in ones chosen daw and recording it would have he same effect then, or is there something about Digital Audio Tape that sounds nicer when clipped?

long. or too long for me anyway. Once you start geting close to adjusting something to cancel out phasing the tiniest millisecond either way can make it even worse, I find it often way too fiddly to get it bang on.

It will do something.... Whether it sounds 'right' is a matter of taste and context.

I haven't done any comparisons of digital clipping to be honest.

Yeah digital clipping sounds like a mad thing to do but is this really what dilinja did with dat tapes? Or is there something more to it due to the a/d converters on the dat unit?

Some digital clipping can sound ok, I've overdriven reeses through certain plugins and it gave them a really warm nice sounding growl but being the mong I am I forgot to remember what plugin chain I'd set up

Interesting isn't it. How something "wrong" can sometimes be right.
