I've got a whole tune on the go written in C and it's sounding sweet but the farking sub isn't hitting right.

When i have it on C1, it doesn't have the right weight but when i drop it an octave it barely registers.

Is there any trick to this or do i need to change the key of my whole track?

that's what i'm talking about

if i drop it an octave it's too low, if i raise it an octave it's too high

Best to experiment, maybe make the bass melody different depending on the track makes it more round also if you got more melodies (which fit).

Try another sub which is easiest. Or you could overdrive/saturate the one you have on another track in parallel and do all sorts of stuff to that -while still having a clean copy. Maybe even resample at a higher octave and drive that on top of it all. Watch the volume increase.

Wicked yeah the parallel channels a good shout.

Fucking hate this, it's alright if i remember to write in a key that i know sub sits well in but sometimes i forget/just need to write it in a differemnt key

thanks

To be honest, i was never really into production when i was writing drum & bass, i only posted on here in the hope that someone would post a hidden link to meatspin that i could pretend to be rumbled by.

Since i've started writing 100bpm shit though i've become a load more interested in properly learning production instead of just slinging samples together.

I'd also just like to state that Ableton is the absolute bad boy when you learn it, nothing else ive used comes close to it for speed/creativity.

Indeed, Ableton really is a very cool piece of kit.

However, Reason still is completely and utterly gay.

For the longest time i would've argued with you, but ableton has all the wicked features that Reason has without the gheyness so........i agree with you.

When you say the track is in C do you mean every note in it fits the C major scale? Or are all the sub notes literally C?

I know this seems like a shit question... But gotta ask so my suggestion doesn't seem like total spasticity.

If all the sub notes are C try an E instead, it's in the the same scale and is a third so may work better without sounding horrendous.

If the bassline is various notes and it's only the odd C that doesn't pack a punch then leave it. Sometimes it works better when some notes hit hard and others don't.

Or just use a different synth patch for the sub.

Move the melody up a few keys.
Use other notes in the scale.
Use sliding notes with pitch wheel.

Just 3 ideas off the top of my very hungover head

Depends on what kind of bassline you're going for, gadgebot. With the right harmonics that C1 can sound great on a system.

Compress it to make that note louder?
Chorus?
Some sort of saturation or overdrive?
