But really its got to be Jordan, he smoked 3 packs a day in his prime or Ali in the way that he was forced not to fight for three years (?) in his prime.
The problem with saying people like Jordan is he plays in a sport which is practically only played in America. It is bigger now than it was but still...He wouldn't be near a list I made anyway
14 gold olympic gold medals and he doesn't even figure on anyone's list?! Michael Phelps deserves a mention imo.
Seriously though, without choosing some guy from the 1890's who probably represented his country at seven different sports or summat I'd say this guy..
I think Pele or Ali are the 2 most iconic and recognised sportsmen of all time and with football being the most popular sport in the world and Pele being the greatest to play the game I think you'd be hard pushed to go against Pele.
Agreed on the Jordan thing, most American sports are just that and nobody outside the country watches it, I mean I bet more people in the UK watch WWF that NBA.
Karelin went 13 years being undefeated in international tournaments, and went 6 years without giving up a single point, he won gold medals at the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games.

In terms of being the best in their individual sport, I'd say Sugar Ray Robinson.
He is widely regarded as the best boxer of all time, fought in the toughest era of the sport and was a World Champion in numerous weight divisions.
A lot of sports have dispute over who was the best ever, such as football with the Pele vs Maradona debates, cricket with the Tendulkar vs Bradman argument etc, but with boxing everyone tends to agree that Ray Robinson was the greatest, and considering the competition, that's some fucking achievement.
The only reason not all people think it is Tyson is because Ali was so awesome both inside and outside the ring and the fact Tyson didn't stop before he did.
Tyson is one of the most overated boxers of all time and belongs nowhere near this list. He was good but many delusional fans claim he was some sort of god, when he hardly beat anyone good and the second he faced top competition he got dealt with, i.e. holyfield and lewis
tyson is a fringe top 20 hw
