I did the graveyard shift as a cab controller last year for some extra bucks. Not London, but Saaf Coast.

Private hire. I can only speak for these guys and the council-plate lot that work for Brighton cabs... the money is SHIT for private hire and not much better for the others. Petrol is fucking expensive, the work is piecemeal and hard. Average money works out about £9 an hour if they put the hours in.

taken from http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2002/nov/10/wageslaves.careers

which, granted, is 10 years old. but....

Income

Most put in a 40- to 50-hour week and earn around £23,000 after expenses. It's not a cheap business to run. A new vehicle costs £28,000, insurance £1,600 a year, garage fees another £1,300 and then there are repairs on top of that.

obviously they do cash in hand aswell so not all of it is through the books, someone at work was telling me today that on the jubilee weekend his brother in law went out friday night- came back tuesday (slept in his cab) and made 2grand...

you take what you want, as your effectively your own boss. so if you need 300pounds, you stay out all day until youve made it. so they in effect have no wage cap.

I wouldn't fancy getting in a cab with a man who had spent the weekend sleeping in it

Think about it tho, minicabs ain't allowed to do street pick-ups, and also if you were a tourist what would you rather, one of the iconic black taxis on all the postcards which wait outside your hotel/every major trainstation or some backstreet place above a kebab shop full of Somalis?  Think a standard airport run is £75 as well.  Not bad for a couple hours work!

Also nuff people in here seem to be confusing the London cab drivers with just standard "cab drivers"...
