Tis fairly deep. I'm interested in what the threat is. Surely if it's a hijacked plane then shooting it down over the east end would cause a lot of death whether it reaches the olympic site or not. If they're fretting about the terrorists having missiles is the olympic site the best target. Personally if i was an anarchist and i had a heat seeker missile i'd be driving up and down the M25 near heathrow taking pot shots at jumbos.

thing is, if they didn't do it, and the olympics was targeted from the air, everyone would be asking why we didn't have air defence.

and the people living in the flats will be safer than they would be if they wasn't there. so i don't see what they have to worry about.

i'm more happy to know every defence that's needed is there personally.

I think the gripe is having a military presence trawling around your premises for weeks on end. It would annoy me.

Having a military target on your roof lowers your risk of attack? Bet you were a general.

being annoyed for a few weeks -vs- having a plane/rocket flown into your yard, though?

yes it does. the amount of security that will be there will be immense. look at who we are protecting against, al qaeda. not known for targeting military targets are they?

What about if you were searched every time you walked into your building?

i would permanently be thinking '-vs- having a plane/rocket flown into your yard'.

i'm not saying it wont be annoying for the people living there. i'm saying the annoyance is worth it if it means having good air defence at the olympics.

I don't see why there is any fuss about this at all. There is a massive chance that terrorists will target the olympics, the military must do all they can to prevent an attack, this towerblock is obviously the best location for them to take position so if this means a few residents are slightly put out for a few weeks then so be it!

What aerial threats though? Are Ze Germans gonna be sending bombers or something?

Complete overkill imo, if we carry on like this then before long we'll be living in a police state.

Surface to air missiles on tower blocks in London wtf

It's not about arguing against it, it's about being concerned that it might actually increase the risk to civilians rather than reduce it.

Exactly, the only way Al Qaeda have ever attacked from the air is in hijacked civilian planes, which once they are over London shooting them down will do as much civilian damage as not shooting them down. Either you deal with it before they are over a highly populated area or you're fucked anyway.

If I was in one of those blocks of flats I'd be fucked off. The last thing I want is Rizzle and his mates sat on my roof with a load of missiles laying about.

Ever since the terrible Baader Meinhof Munich attack any attack against such a internationally respected event would mean suicide in terms of support from the ignorant masses that feed the likes of these organisations. Coupled that with that East London is teeming with a largely Muslim community so you would think twice before doing anything stupid there. Yes sure in Iraq and Afghanistan it is a different situation but that is solely because of the whole Sunni and Shiite conflict as well as simply demoralising the general public towards any goal of change and future.
