- minimum price of 40p per UNIT of alcohol in "England and Wales" in an effort to stamp out binge drinking. (No Scotland) - Your nightout will increase - no more cheap supermarket booze - Beer minimum price £1.20 a can - Cider minimum price £1.60 a can - Drinks industry said the plans were misguided and would hit consumers hard - However Hard Liqour (whiskey, vodka) remains unchanged
Same old shit really. They never confront the root cause of anything.
A minority drinking too much? Put the price up for everyone.
It wont stop anything. Eventually it will go the same way cigarettes is going and more will be available on the black-market. I know smokers who haven't smoked a cigarette from this country in years.
but also how many drinks cost less than 40p per unit at present? Not many, pretty much just tramp cider, a can of beer, at 2.2 units, would only cost like 88p, which is cheaper than what it's actually sold at now anyway. special offers may be another matter though
but imo increasing the prices won't make any difference, it's a social issue and needs to be dealt with in other ways.

The shit they find in the fakes is pretty horrible. I think your mates should just quit smoking
I know people in Norway where alchohol has been priced right up and people generally dont drink as much. Thats what they say anyway. Even though its a pretty rudimentary way to handle drinking surely pricing up will do something. Not saying its an actual solution to all drink related problems but it will make a difference for some people even if its just buying one less drink on a night out or drinking weaker drinks to save money.
