Does look good. The first LOTR film was my favourite. Felt it deteriorated as it went on, with the 3rd dragging enormously. However, first time I would say a film was better than a book. I like the books but some of it was just pure waffle, endless tedious nonsense...so even the dragging in the films was a fraction of the last book.
I reckon this will be the best of the lot. Was reading that he's tried to keep the sinister and dark tone of the LOTR films but made it more of a light hearted romp like the book. Book is amazing.

I'm looking forward to this even though I think it's the least interesting Tolkien book. Sadly the most interesting one will almost certainly never be made into at least six films.

The Silmarillion?
Its just too big and epic to be transferred into film IMO. I just don't see how they could do it.

You're probably right, although they could maybe make a few standalone films out of the bigger stories in the book (war of the silmarils, Beren & Luthien, Turin etc). Maybe if the Hobbit films do really well HBO or someone might have a go at a series, although even that probably couldn't cover all the scope of it.

This/ Plus i'm pretty sure the bit where the ghosts win the battle of Gondor isn't in the books and makes the whole fight seem pointless.
Read The Hobbit about 3 times so can't wait for this release
I liked the second film also, but mainly because of the Rohan sections. The more I think about it, I think the third film is my least favourite. The one I've rewatched the least anyway.
The continuity and sense of adventure makes the Fellowship stand out for me... there's too much chopping between scenes in the other two although I realise there was a lot to cram in and the chronology of simultaneous events in different locations is important. I'd probably appreciate some of the plot and characters more when I eventually read the books.
