I have to visit houses in these estates quite regularly in my job. Some of them are fucking horrendous, as well as those who live in them. Wipe your feet on the way out type deal. It's amazing how these places won't have any carpet or curtains, but will have a massive 60 inch tv on the wall. Conniburrow is a bit of a shithole too in mk, been to a few disgusting residencies there.

I've got loads of good (bad) places in mind, but my browser at work doesn't get on with Flash

Rhys, how did you link directly to the area?

Mine is Oxclose, Peterborough.

The whole of that area is dirt, and they all have horrible street names too.

The worst ghettos don't have streetview yet.

I tried looking for one in Rio, but they have only done the nice streets and main roads. Even Naples they would turn into the bad roads.

Need to get on with doing Lagos / Dhaka / Kabul.

Haven't got time to find specific locations but Skelmersdale and Little Hulton in Lancashire have some contenders for the crown

Some of those in Ireland and Scotland are disgusting.

How does an area get so bad that entire streets are filled with burnt out, fucked up houses?

Place in Limerick I stumbled upon before which actually had cows and horses walking round it.  Looked it up on wikipedia and apparently during the 90s over 85% of the population relied on social welfare.  The emerald isle.

Yeah alot of high-rise places in London ain't actually that bad any more.  You could probably walk round Haygate, Aylesbury estate etc in complete safety these days.  Its the proper cut off parts that are most grim IMO.  North Woolwich and Mardyke etc... also I'd rather live slap bang in the middle of anywhere in Hackney or Brixton than somewhere like Tilbury or Jaywick.

Few years back Gascoigne was in the national press cos the post office refused to deliver to there cos posties kept being attacked

If you have ever watched the Scottish film NEDS, you would recognise the housing estate.

You can see them running through it in the trailer here...

I did see Neds actually - I recognised the estate from when I was taking the train up to the Highlands, right next to the railway track for all the tourists to see.

Here's some more from Limerick: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=186930 - Google missed out a few of the estates the first time, and one of the top Garda in Ireland asked why they didn't visit.  'Because they're no-go neighbourhoods'.  'There are NO no-go neighbourhoods in Ireland!  Get your camera back out there!'

Not "bad" no, just grim and depressing.  Been through there before and it made Dagenham seem like Las Vegas.

@Jim, that estate in Glasgow I think is where Rab C Nesbitt was filmed, and the place I was trying to think of in Limerick with cows walking about in the street was Myross.  Same as above really, I'd rather live on any inner-city estate than somewhere like that.

Dunno if its still there but there used to be a proper weird looking estate there by the train stations.  Looked like something by MC Escher.

Can't really comment on Catford apart from that.  Thing about these threads is that people who're from some of the "worst" places (Hackney, Peckham etc) always seem to say how it ain't that bad, but people from some "nicer" places (places like Basingstoke) are always saying how bad they are.

Limerick's got a fearsome reputation - I'd heard a few stories about it, but the pics on streetview made my jaw drop.  I'd seen some pictures of Craigavon in Northern Ireland - it was built new in the 60s, but the main employer in the pulled out, it then got messed up in the troubles, so the town was basically left half built, without facilities, left to rot.  There's rows of boarded up suburban housing, with gypsies parked up on the green and horses wandering around.

I thought this was the estate in Catford, but it's actually miles away: http://g.co/maps/mftb8.  I actually did a study and lots of background reading on these sorts of estates - there was a lot of pressure in the 1960s on rehousing people quickly and cheaply, so new building methods were being used where slabs of concrete were being produced in factories and quickly fixed together on location.  Usually corners were cut, fittings were not correctly put into place, and the metal rods that were supposed to support the building, were exposed through the concrete, rusting, and then causing the concrete to crack.  Plus they had damp, leakages, insect infestations and lost their heating through bad insulation.  Some of them barely lasted 10 years before being demolished.

Here's a few:

Hunslet Grange, Leeds

Balloon Woods, Nottingham

Southgate, Runcorn

@Jim, my mum and dad lived on Freemasons Estate in Custom House... that was one of the worst like that.  Pre-fabricated with not much structural knowlege/care.  The estate is famous for Ronan Point...

All the blocks have since gone but the place remains a proper shithole.  Don't usually like to hype areas too much like this but its got to have been one of the worst parts of London.  Was quite an infamous murder a few years back there, a young father was shot by a 17 year old after being terrorised by the local kids and the police simply didn't bother responding to any complaints, think that shows what sort of area it always was.  Proper tragic.  Ain't been there for years though so its probably been cleared up a bit, what with the olympics etc.  Also weirdly its right opposite the Excel Centre.

Yeah I agree with that used to live in Hackney opposite these monstrosaties http://g.co/maps/7cuv8 never had any trouble apart from some woman asking if I was gay lol

Get higher frequency of trouble per capita in small provincial towns imo. Although maybe living in these places you get desensitised?

That's interesting, I was amazed how after the explosion, they just patched up the damaged corner and housed people there for another 20 years.  Canning Town does seem like it would be the last place in London to be gentrified - places like Hackney or Tottenham have their troublespots, but at least there's a bit of life there.  Places like Canning Town or Barking don't really have anything to recommend them, just a lot of people who wish they weren't living there.

This is where my sister lived: http://g.co/maps/ejkty, in trendy Shoreditch.  Those flats were in the film Tony.  They were OK actually, though you always had to take a detour to avoid the drug deals taking place along the canal.

I'm guessing Google will recruit suitable locals from areas not deemed safe for the standard team to enter to complete the project?

I still cant quite beleve we have at our fingertips the ability to view nearing the majority of the populated earth from the comfort of our home without them asking for a penny.

Google does no fuck about. Huge endless massive props. The task they have undertook and succeeded in is nothing short of monumental.

Ive said it before and i'll say it again, i welcome them as ruler of the internet
