If you read the story she actually lost a shit load of weight and put it back on again.
Mother is clearly to blame although it would seem she has had quite a shit childhood so psychologically she eats to overcome depression.
Yeah in fairness, that's how I read it as well, looks like she went to the states to come sort of fat camp and when she got back her mum said oh I haven't got anything healthy lets go up the fish and chip shop and the progression started again, some people simply should not be allowed to breed.
