been a while since anything of note on this vibe dropped really! the djrum album is excellent though

it's funny, listening back, a lot of this kind of stuff really hasn't aged well... especially the swamp81 stuff

anyway, new joy orbison is great. Love the a side especially https://tossportal.bandcamp.com/album/off-season-fuerza-hinf8679

and these are nice tracks too from pangaea https://pangaeauk.bandcamp.com/album/bone-sucka

I went to a festival with a lot of avant garde techno I suppose you'd call it earlier this year. Fuck me it was awful. Floating Points played live and at one point it was just a series of random beeps and aquatic noises... kind of like the original Blue Planet soundtrack. No beat.
It made me angry it was so bad.

And the crowd, bunch of hipster zombies dressed like hippies milling around waiting for something to happen. It never did. This was going on across 3 stages simultaneously, all the same dreary techno, the musical equivalent of unseasoned porridge.

Bit of an off topic rant, but this seemed like the best place to plant it. Especially with your comment about listening back to some of this stuff Gav. Some of it is still great, but a lot of it was undercooked at the time and hasn't got any better now, just trend music.

It's a real shame that the majority of the future garage guys from this period disappeared up their own arses.

Yeah a similar thing happened to the Autonomic type stuff from the same period. That just because increasingly more minimal until it disappeared up its own arse.

I used to think Blawan was one of the dons of this scene but I look at Discogs and he only had a very small number of releases before he turned to drab fart sniffing techno.

I'll never get the mindset that the pinnacle of "artistry" in music is to shun all melody and be as musically obtuse as possible.

I completely agree with what you're saying, but I guess it's about people trying out new things and seeing what shit sticks.

I would argue that the pinnacle of artistry is an ability to make music that is consistently at a higher level over a long period of time, like 10+ years. That way you grow and change as an artist and while some stuff isn't always going to hit, it will make a mark. dBridge would be a prime example.

yeah, absolutely. i think a lot of it is to do with the step up from singles to LPs, that's when so many of these guys seem to have come unstuck

did you listen to the pariah album this year for example? i had such high hopes but fuck me. dreadful. orpheus and the safehouses ep still sound great though imo

i can't remember who it was... objekt i think... who dropped a 45 minute album of purely beatless 'ambient' computer clicks. utter bilge. so self-indulgent. no idea who stuff like that's supposed to appeal to

I generally agree, although his new album is exactly the sort of parp that is being discussed here.

I completely agree with that to be fair.  I like artists that constantly push themselves creatively, but for these guys a lot of the time it seems to have been a complete rejection of what they made before and quite alienating to a lot of fans of their previous music.  I don't think artists owe anything to their fans per se, but I find is strange that a lot of artists don't seem to realise that you can be as much a follower in the underground as you can in commercial music.

Yeah I'm sure Submerse had some similar output as well, just bafflingly bad anti-music.
