Canal paths, country parks, cycling to the local, perhaps the odd commute and a piece of road riding.

Budget £500, 15% discount with Halfords...

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_518233_langId_-1_categoryId_165499

cost me £40

i know nothing about cycles so sorry for wasting your time

that bike does look sick though, but for that money wouldn't you rather buy a new jacket?

I'd go for a hybrid really. Unless your cycling on proper off road terrain a mountain bike is overkill and will be a pain in the arse after a while, especially on roads. I'd also go to a proper bike shop for advice, halfords is full of fucking idiots. Dont have suspension unless you really need it, and if you do only front. At that budget it'll be heavy and shit.

you couldnt ride a hybrid off road, at all though. well you could but it would fuck the wheels, mayaswell get a mountain bike, and just buy road wheels separate then you can swap if you gonna go on a mammoth bike ride through a wood or something, or vice versa.

I was on my mate's racer and with the number of fucking potholes everywhere, it was hurting without front suspension on occasion. Make of that what you will

It depends on the wheels of course. I had a hybrid and road it across some right shit heaps in croatia, up dirt tracks etc. Admittedly the wheel did royally fuck up but that wasnt til I went over some fuck off huge potholes with a shit tonne of luggage on the back

I only get a discount at Halfords or Cyclelife.Com...

To be fair I doubt I'll be commuting much, 10 miles at 6 in the morning is a par.

I appreciate Halfords is like the Vauxhall Conference of bike shops however I have to work with what I'm given or atleast what's within my budget, if within the outlined parameters then I guess I can look elsewhere.

You'd be amazed how much difference speed there is just in the wheels and tires alone. Thats why most people say Hybrids are better - but as said, the wheels aren't the strongest. You've just got to be realistic about what you'll use it for.

Myk mainly cycling along the Grand Union and through some country parks along footpaths etc.

I was told to have a look at these too;

http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b0s2p1938

http://www.sunsetmtb.co.uk/shop/index.php?product_id=1169&category_id=21

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_518245_langId_-1_categoryId_165499

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_512507_langId_-1_categoryId_165499

Which are all slightly over budget, I would only be using them for long distance a couple of times a week if that.

Watsgood, I'll be getting a new jacket next month, reverse dye S.I. in red

Majik...

Little known fact..

Halfords can order in bikes from almost any manufacturer.

If that helps..

I've just bought one of these and I've just been out on it..

Road bikes are seriously fast

No idea! Worth asking though..

I would recommend looking around for 09 models though around the net.. Big savings to be had compared to 2010 bikes.. The Orange in your links above is nice.. They make nice bikes

This, hybrids are clown shoes. My hardtail MTB does a cracking job along my canal commute to work, it has Rock Shox front suspension like that one, it's alright but I reckon it should cushion more of the impact really for the price I paid for the bike. However the overall performance of an MTB if you're going along canal paths and country roads is excellent. Buy some slicks if you want for faster road riding.

6 miles in half an hour to and from work is me.

I am getting a road bike on the cycle2work next year hopefully.

Also another issue, I'm 6'2ish, would I need a 20"?

Even sourcing a decent local bike shop is tough, recession has hit hard.

Not really determined by height mate. I am also 6'2 and orignally thought I would be a 59cm frame but I actually fitted a 56cm frame.

Go get tested at halfords.

Yeah I'm just under 6' and on a 56 but it will depend on your seat and legs.

I really wouldn't recommend a mountain bike for commuting, heavy and slow. A friend has one and I'm ahead of him in seconds on roads.

Reccomended by 3 Londoners all who commute in the review aswell.
