What's this jailbreak thing you're on about?
I'm assuming it's freeing up the I phone to receive apps from other sites than iTunes?
If so how do I do this?

Yup, that's what jailbreaking is.  There's programs out there to do it for you but you need to know your model and firmware before doing it, and you'd probably need a copy of the firmware on the PC.

hmm I'm outta my depth here, what's firmware?

It's sort of like the operating system your iPhone/touch has.  There's different programs for different firmwares.

Firmware is more like what's sitting under the OS software really, it governs the devices behavior and is not normally accessible to the operator.

what apps are out there that makes jailbreaking worth it? seems like a lot of hassle and potential problems. Is there a free jailbreak means of getting the tomtom app for instance?

p.s. ping is wicked, hate going over my text limits so just use ping with others that have iphones

Well, there's Winterboard, allows you to change the theme of your screen, there's MxTube, allows you to download YouTube videos to your iPhone/touch, there's Installous, for all the cracked apps (like the TomTom maps) and that's all I use really.  There's loads of other good stuff on Cydia.

check your firmware by going to settings -> genral -> about -> version. once you know that find the right tutorial from here http://www.iclarified.com/entries/index.php?caid=2&scid=11&seid=2 and follow the instructions. its pretty simple really.

i think all firmware can be jailbroke unless you have a 3GS on 3.1 or 3.1.2 but it'll only be a matter of time before that can be jailbroke.

oh and when you have jailbroke your iphone DONT upgrade your firmware in itunes.

It's all legit and above board. They'll be bringing out an app for it but it works fine as it is. Think that's only a beta too.

But yeah fucking sick, was suprised at the quality and the speed it loaded up.
