I'm not reading this. I tried it, the initial premise is great and the characters are initially engaging, but it drags on so fucking long, 75% in and I was having to force myself to read it. Nope. Some people might like it though.

This on the other hand I had to force myself to stop reading. Simple but effective premise, easy reading, and quite a gripping execution. Very moreish.

...is this what you want???

I’m reading The Grass Arena by John Healy after someone on here recommended it. It is absolutely grim lol. Puts the Sunday Feels thread in perspective.

On every page he either passes out from booze in a derelict house, gets the shit kicked out of him, goes to prison, or kicks the shit out of someone.

He just got released from prison and spotted two guys who beat him up:

good innit, but properly grim as you said. still, i couldnt help but weirdly romanticise about the life despite it all. sign of a good writer i suppose

just finished 'man in the high castle'. absolutely excellent. a good story on its own but with a lot deeper/more profound meaning that i admit i havent quite figured out yet. will mull on it for a few days

will have to read more philip k dick now

We by Yevgeny Zamyatin. Basically the first dystopian novel... written in 1920s Russia and heavily influential on 1984 and Brave New World. It’s a fairly odd composition but well worth picking up if you like that sort of thing

Sounds right up my alley. I'll give that a go.

this keeps getting recommended to me on amazon, will have to relent and do a buy

finished this not too long ago:

about the downfall of the ethiopian monarchy/empire/haile selassie. very interesting. bought another one of his books off the back of it, 'another day of life' about the end of colonialism in angola and the outbreak of civil war

now on this:

also excellent, enjoying it a lot. the story itself is surprisingly gripping, but it's also an allegorical critique of the philisophical theory behind the soviet union

That Purity book I posted above was pretty mental. If you want a novel about:

The ethics of leaking news on the internet
wanking
the fall of the berlin wall and the nature of revolution
the battle of the sexes
emotional blackmail
and yes, the concept of purity, then give it a whirl.

Just finishing this

Amusing and easy to read

Finished Great Expectations by Dickens around New Year and started to re-read The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins - possibly the first detective novel.

One of the things I enjoy about reading classics is the insight into how people used to live, how much things have changed, and often how they remain the same.

Opening message from The Moonstone - just do what your woman says, everything will be much simpler :)

I had no idea those books were still being written! Loved them as a teenager.

Currently finishing the Reluctant Tommy by Ronald Skirth, quite a grim memoir on WWI

Finished this the other day. Absolute mastapeece. One of the funniest books I've ever read and is pretty shocking and gut-wrenching at times. It's full of stuff like this.

People who had hardly noticed his resemblance to Henry Fonda before now never ceased discussing it, and there were even those who hinted sinisterly that Major Major had been elevated to squadron commander because he resembled Henry Fonda. Captain Black, who had aspired to the position himself, maintained that Major Major really was Henry Fonda but was too chickenshit to admit it.
