i thought it was a pretty decent standalone film, with some great moments and a strong central performance, but yeah... it's a very, very loose adaptation of the book

have you read the other 2 books in the trilogy? i've only just started book 2, but it feels like they crammed those 2 books into the last 10 minutes of the film as some sort of "uhhh yeah it was aliens or something" kind of ending.

Also thought Annihilation was pretty poor overall. Had some good bits, like the scary dog/beast thing that barks people's screams, but got bored towards the end.

yeah man, read all three. i warn you... the second one is a real slog. i'm not quite sure what he was thinking, but fortunately it does start to get interesting again towards the end

the third book is absolutely fantastic though. debatably the best of the three. you do get a (fairly vague) answer as to the origins of Area X too

but yeah i agree, there are a few token nods to the rest of the story in the film. alex garland claims to have not even read the second and third books, which is pretty strange...

like i said, i did rate the film, but i would've loved a proper six-hour mini-series adaptation of the whole trilogy as written

Watched Annihilation at the weekend and thought it was shite, which is annoying as the book is pretty good. They've stripped out any subtelty, as well as a massive part of the story that made the whole Area X thing interesting. The ending is absolute garbage.

A lot of dumbing down of language and subtlety in films. 19th Century butlers used to say something along the lines of "Good evening, sir. May I welcome you on behalf of Sir Burton and escort you to the dining room.", to "Alright mate, gis ya coat".

Thought Annihilation was great. Nice mystery and intrigue to draw you in, good characters, looked good as well. VG++

Edit: The Road is bleak. In before some cunts say the book is way better/darker.

I, Tonya is a wicked film. I think I knew the name Tonya Harding but didn’t know any of the story which probably helped going in.

Some outstanding peformances in it as well.

Saw this last night, fucking awesome (imo)!!
Highly recommend going to the cinema to see it for the full experience though, the use of sound was fantastic but some of it might get lost at home.

Unless you got Dolby Atmos which is better than the sound at the cinema

 Was waiting for that.

The film is tense as fuck even though they set some of it up for you, they way it occurs and the way they've used the sound and lack of sound is immense. Almost no dialogue at all.

SIGS, EVERYTHING SIGS.

I haven't seen it because fuck the lack of cinema release up the arse, but interested to read these comments. I thought the trailer looked great for capturing the vibe and setting rather than exactly replicating the story, and I was happy with that.

I've read the trilogy twice, the second book is actually my favourite, I really like the perspective of Control and his tense interactions with the other staff, and some of the scenes (especially with the scientist dude) were proper creepy. I find the 3rd dragged for me, but it was all good. I entirely agree about a mini-series adaptation OFC.

Rightly so too. I found The Road book bleak as fuck, and the film (not in the slightest bit inferior to the book), a mixture of bleak and sad as fuck - the feels nearly got me.

Re: Film News + Reviews 2018/04/23 13:51:13 (permalink)
been flying around a lot recently and caught up on a lot of good films from earlier in the year:

Three Billboards - yup, it's really good. i'm sure everything worth saying has been said 5/5

Shape of Water - despite the good reviews (and awards) i actually wasn't expecting very much. pleasantly surprised though all round. central performances were excellent, the look and feel was spot-on, and i thought the story was great 4.5/5

Wind River - this was a real surprise. i loved the guy's previous two projects (sicario and hell or high water) but wasn't sure if that was just because they were brought to life by two excellent directors. this might be my favourite of the three though. i was also nervous about jeremy renner and elizabeth olsen, neither of whom i particularly like, but they were perfect. this has some of the tensest action i've seen for a while though, and a great story that's paced perfectly. highly recommended 5/5

Coco - pretty incredible to look at, with lots of nice little visual jokes to keep the tone light, while the body of the story is actually quite emotional and heavy-hitting. i did really enjoy it but it lacked the sheer creativity of something like Inside Out, or the innovation of (say) Wall-E 4/5

Phantom Thread - very beautiful and unique film, featuring three absolutely outstanding performances from DDL, lesley manville and Vicky Krieps (who i'd never heard of before), plus a new score from jonny greenwood. it's a really quite strange story - almost a fairy tale - about ritual, perfection and obsession, but still oddly captivating. about a million miles better than Inherent Vice, but it falls just short of Paul Thomas Anderson's best work imo 4/5

Thor Ragnorak - really entertaining. probably my favourite marvel film to date. genuinely funny, with some great visuals and performances all round. only thing that falls a bit flat is cate blanchett's villain. hard to imagine Infinity War being half as good 4.5/5

This. I watched it at the weekend on the recommendation of a mate who thought it was excellent.

It's fucking woeful. The acting was wooden as fuck, the script was irredeemably dull, it looked like an episode of that Primeval show from ITV that had Hannah from S-Club in it. I didn't care one ounce what happened to any of the characters, but they were all so boring I didn't hate them enough to be happy when one got ripped to shreds.

Yep, thought this was brilliant. It does a perfect job of building tension from the first scene to the last.

I have a question though (spoilers etc)

When the dad climbs up on top of the tower the first time and lights a fire, were there other people in the distance lighting fires to signal back? I thought that was what happened, but 2 other people I asked didn't get that from the scene. Because there's no mention of anyone else in the world except that family, i might be wrong.
