Blazed a fat one last night and watched 'Tyrannosaur'.......fuck me, lol.

Brutally dark, but brilliant nonetheless.

I've got tyrannosaur on the HD, looks grim like Nil By Mouth.

I'm really curious to see what they do with that. Arnie version wasn't true to the book supposedly, plus I've seen it so many times now that I actually hate it a little bit lol

The beginning of the book and the film are pretty much the same but in the book he never actually goes to Mars. The book plays around more with the idea of the authenticity of memories and there's more twists where everyone thinks a memory is real, then think its fake, then realise it is real after all. The reality for the protagonist flips back and forth loads.

It actually wouldn't really work as a film if you stuck really closely to the book, its too short, would only be 30 mins of story unless you really stretched it out somehow.

Other than the obvious titles; mullholland drive, the matrix etc. what films question people's concept of reality?

edit: bit of an open ended question but looking for something along these lines to watch tonight

Some Obvious ones -

Total Recall

LOL @ ascribing any meaning/depth to Total Recall

Total Recall is a genuine classic... Paul Verhoeven is a master of splicing silly slapstick 80s action/gore with pinpoint satire and social commentary. Robocop and Starship Troopers are perfect examples as well. Total Recall is especially silly because it has Arnie in it, but still way more than just an action film. In terms of the reality-questioning theme as well.. it came before most of the other films mentioned above.

totally agree. total recall, robocop and starship troopers are all deceptively complex.

I haven't watched Total Recall recently but Robocop and Starship Troopers definitely have an underlying social commentary to them. More so than I ever realised when I watched them when I was younger.

I fucking hate the pricks in Hollywood. I'd actually maliciously download their films if I thought it would hurt them financially. There's no common sense with any of it, just plain old greed.

I can't get my head around how they own rights to something that wasn't even created by them in the first place.

Fair play if the pub has pictures and references to the film but other than Elisia Woods mug on the loyalty card how can they be breaching copyright?

I'd be surprised if that company owned the rights 20 years ago when the pub started using the name too. It's essentially retrospectively suing someone for doing something before you did.

I can see why they might be pissed off at that lol

Yes it opened 20 years ago but its clearly referencing the films, not just the books.

Hollywood = wankers standard though
I have heard of similar cases which were much more frivolous (not that I remember any)

Hang on. I'm sure the Tolkien family got screwed over by the studios and hadn't actually been paid for the rights. Maybe they have now but i'm sure the rights were still in dispute after the third film came out.

They now have a license so they're going after any registered business with anything Tolkieny in the name. There's a sandwich shop in Tokiens home town called The Hungary Hobbit which has been targeted as well - its a tiny sarnie shop paying homage to Talkien who grew up in the village and Hollywood are trying to bum them. Proper overkill corporate gayness.

Yeah the loyalty card thing is too much, that actually is dodgy. The drinks and pub name and sign and everything should be fine though.

Moseley.

Hollywood should get a new hobby, the price of knock off merchandise will rise as result.

But I love that plane! I used to fly to Vegas in it with Dean Martin.
One time we were flyin' in it, and the moon hit his eye like a big pizza pie!
We wrote a song about it! But it ended up infringing on one he recorded years before.

Prometheus trailor

Ive not been so excited for a film...pretty much ever.

If it lives up to the hype it will be the film of the decade imo

Ah right. Well I'm late on it compared to you guys so I'm sure this post will frustrate you further

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndB7uVZfjt0&feature=related

Interview with the Director. Very good quote regarding ambiguity about how the questions are always more interesting than the answers, because in film when you are shown the answers to questions that you have already imagined the answers for in your head, you're always disappointed because it's never quite what you imagined. Definitely seems to be the ethos behind Kill List and although I do feel a bit frustrated and want to tie all the loose ends up, I'm sure if we were shown what happened in Kiev or explicitly told the motivations of the cult and Jay's relationship to them that the film wouldn't be anywhere near as good. Something about the film just resonated with me, found it fascinating. And any film where you want to think about it for ages afterwards is good in my book.
