Charles Hazlewood explores what makes a good pop single, breaking the songs down into six key areas - melody, song structure, lyrics, production arrangement and performance. and looking at successful songs in the genre. The conductor uses successful albums from the genre including John Lennon's Imagine and Amy Winehouse's Back to Black to examine these categories. Contributors include songwriter Guy Chambers, ABC singer Martin Fry and producers Steve Levine and Richard Niles

Generics of a pop song;

Song must be about boy or girl and some form or relationship or about love !
Song must be sung by attractive person/people !
Song must appeal to stupid moron kids who will bug their parents to buy shit CD X !
Song must make kids bug parents to take them or pay for them to go and see shit boy/girl group or shit band X !
Pop must not resemble good music like it did in the 60's & 70's causing the young folks to rise up in rebellion against society !
Pop must be generic and stick to same plan or said evil empires or multi-nationals will fall around their feet !

Last time the multi-national music conglomerates were witnessed at work;

Don't be so bitter and dismissive. There's plenty of great pop songs, and there's plenty of shit ones. There was some utter tripe in the 60s and 70s, it's just the good songs that are remembered.

I pretty much loathe two types of music

Pop & R'n'B and also the the R'n'B that tries to call itself hip-hop

yes i know that's 3 but the 2nd one is only a half a music genre imo so it doesn't count
