They were a trio: Rob F, Impulse and MC Mecha. I believe Rob F gave up production and Impulse went on to do tunes with Telemetrik and become 'Corrupt Souls'. I dunno about MC Mecha. Bad boy producers, made some sick tunes. Check out: Black Sun Empire - Smoke (Sinthetix Remix) Rob F & Impluse - Ultraviolet Cause 4 Concern - Skewer (Sinthetix Remix) Cryogenic Dementia C4 Gateway Anomaly

That's one of the most informative replies I've ever had on here! Interesting man... Rob F...I think...makes breakbeat - cos I recognise that name on a solo edge... The Sinthetix tunes I have don't have any appearance of MC Mecha...not that I care - Cyogenic and Smoke (Remix) are gonna get popped into a mix that I'll put together over the next 2 weeks....very sick...

No problems man. Smoke remix is just too much, the way it switches up on the 2nd breakdown.

I stuck the Smoke remix on before work, I loved DSCi4 at the time and ten years on, I still do. Timeless beats, d&b really was the forefront of production wasn't it?

Yeah man, you known I bummed DSCI4 for a while. This EP did it for me in a major way http://www.discogs.com/SKC-Trace-Spy-Technologies-LP-Sampler/release/51797 Delierious was a big tune. I ended up buying that entire Spy Tech LP, as singles like they were put out in Parliament records. Cost me an arm and a leg. If I remember I sold it for about 60 quid on discogs a few years back.

They had a vibe about their tunes which was so sick, it still sounds futuristic now, 10 years later Cryogenic, Ultraviolet and Recall are 3 of the best dnb tunes ever made for me. Smoke Remix is sick too, have to play the whole thing for it to make sense... more of a listening tune than raving imo And C4 I also like the way they came in, made loads of brilliant tunes then just left it, without going stale and tarnishing their track record. I'd like to think that if I ever got seriously into production and tried to 'make it', that's what I'd do

I know, you were one of the first DJs that I listened to that played that style. I ended up buying a couple of the singles that were at Chemical coz I couldn't get the LP and then I bought it off someone on here. It's not the release copy though, so I didn't get the box set with the fancy artwork and stuff. Worth it for Blackout & Smoke remix alone. I couldn't believe that you sold it at the time! Delirious is sick and that remix of Mutationz by Concord Dawn is next level too.

I played my mate a few of these tunes in Melbourne recently, he'd never heard them and we just burnt around the city for an hour smoking ciggies and cranking these tunes through his car sub, reminded me of being 15 and all excited about it all again

All of the tunes you have by Sinthetix have an 'appearance' by MC Mecha as he was part of the trio that made up the production team. He was one of the producers, he didn't do vocals on any of the tracks.

I think I miss the analogue production sound in general, people say you can't tell the difference but you can!

You mean hardware based / outboard gear? Yes definitely. 100% One of the best examples is listen to Ram Trilogy and Ed Rush and Optical tunes from 1999/2000. And listen to Ram and Virus stuff now? Sounds so different, sounds more smooth, not so tough and big.

That's what makes these Sinthetix tunes so good - the beats and bass are very techy and synthetic but you can hear all that warm sounding distortion on it that sounds so good through a good set of speakers. I'd guess they arrived on the scene at the apex of the hardware era, when they could use the machines to a ridiculously high standard and before it all went to computers. I don't know though, I just made that up lol

It's the Emu & Akai samplers man, the Emus in particular were the secret weapon these guys used (Ed Rush & Optical, BC & Dillinja to name a few). Those basslines that Optical was doing on Wormhole, is the sound of the Emu sampler. I only know this, because I've managed to get my hands on one and play around with it and I now own an MPC and I can tell you that outboard gear is 100% the way. Music these days is too synthetic (no pun intended) because of the PC.

Yeah man, I know Fracture & Neptune still use the Emu in their tunes and you can hear it, although a lot of their stuff is essentially a copy of the trademark Virus sound, it sounds good and much more authentic than all the other producers who ride that sound. Watched an interview with Fracture where he said as much, you just can't make some of those bass sounds without an Emu This thread makes me want one

Although, they're big and they use SCSI so you'll need to make sure you get a SCSI card that's compatible. I saw that interview and his face/headnod when that break comes on is classic. I can see why a lot of producers have switched to software, it's like the whole digital thing in DJ'ing (easier, more convenient, more powerful), but it all comes down to the same thing, hardware just sounds better, whether it's a mixing desk, sampler or a pair of turntables.

Is there a specific model that most people use, or is regarded as the 'best' one? This is all hypothetical for the time being but once I have made the move to Melbourne I would be dead keen to have a crack.

There's a thread on DOA's Grid that will give you more information that I can in a single post: http://www.dogsonacid.com/showthread.php?t=366633&highlight=emu+sampler They go for a good price though, the kids are too busy with their software these days.

Indeed! Music production is long, wish my parents were rich and I could have spent all day making beats instead of working.
