It worked before I tinkered with it so I don't think it's that. I've obviously broken it somehow. It's annoying but not annoying enough to have the insides spread out over my coffee table again

Well yeah, that's what I meant. You've either fried the LED or the PCB.

I wouldn't mind removing the click from my new 1200s, but I'm not sure I can bring myself to open them. So much to go wrong, even though I know my way around.

Mate I'm a sausage fingered idiot and I managed it. There's a YouTube tutorial I followed I'll find the link for you later. So satisfying when the ball bearing pops out

You did fry one of your LEDs though.

I know it's easy, but I'm just not comfortable taking apart a mint pair of Technics. Fixing up old knackered ones feels quite different.

22) To remove the centering circuitry, desolder the bottom yellow and orange wires on the pitch circuit board, as told in the previous section. (see fig 5) Then wrap them in black electrical tape so that they DO NOT touch.

did you desolder one or even both of them pitch cables? that would explain it

Re: RE: A little Technics project..... 2017/01/18 19:51:22 (permalink)
Just got my old technics down from my brothers loft. They're all working, just might need the pitch controls re-calibrated (or potentially replaced) and probably new RCAs as one of them was definitely dodgy. I need to put in a few new LEDs too as the green pitch ones barely illuminate and the same with the strobe LEDs

The main problem is the paintwork! They look pretty bad

the paint has faded in a lot of places and even started to peel off somehow round the edges!

Anyone got any ideas how I can go about getting them looking as original as possible?

Would someone rub it down and respray or just powder coat them maybe?

Any tips appreeshed

you may be able to get it shiny black again (apart from the patches missing black colour next to the pitch fader) using a smaller buffing machine and a little bit of polishing paste without taking everything apart.

could also try sanding the colourless parts, put some black lake on it let it dry and buff it

I'm no expert on paint, I had mine powder coated for free by a mate, as they were in a similar state to yours.

They're dead easy to strip down, just have some small bags (coin bags from the bank) to keep all the screws safe to hand.

You can get replacement pitch decals easy enough, but I've not seen the Technics ones that are printed on the case, I'm still looking.

Got a new patient. This one had a keg of beer pour into it from the floor above...

Aside from the beer (and no doubt the smell) it looks in pretty good shape that.

The 1210 pitch decals have pretty much sold out now I heard, apparently they've stopped making all spares for Mk2-5 now. There are fakes coming onto the market, including pitches and arms!

There's something very rewarding about fixing stuff. Beyond the money saved it's the learning. With youtoob tutorials on everything there's no excuse not to have a go IMO.

@Smokey and co

The right channel on my Stanton m304 mixer is dead. Having to use the left and middle channels. Had the case off and can't see anything obviously fried. Where would you start trying to fix something like that?

I agree, I've been watching some vids of this dude repairing broken apple products, totally different to this kind of thing with a nice simple circuit board. He is messing about with tiny chips and really complicated circuits under a microscope, it's amazing the skills he has. Makes good money out of it too as the only official option is to have Apple replace the whole board at £750.

Depends. Are the faders soldered onto the board? If they're only soldered on by wires I'd source a replacement fader and get a mate with an iron to replace it.

I'm a bit concerned about the transformer standing in liquid and the target light is no more, but it could be a lot worse.

Re: RE: A little Technics project..... 2017/09/19 20:55:38 (permalink)
Cheers. It's been broken for years so for some reason I thought the whole channel was dead but turns out I can cue the right channel and see lights, just no output. Had the crossfader out (it's a 4 pin plug), dismantled and cleaned up etc but still same problem.

Seems like that would be a crossfader problem then or potentially could be a problem with the up fader?

Going to try get a replacement crossfader from Stanton and see.

edit: Was the fucking up fader. Switched it out with the middle one and now works. Still missing a channel but at least can use the X-Fader now.

Re: RE: A little Technics project..... 2017/09/19 21:13:13 (permalink)
Do you assign the channels to L & R on the fader, or is the middle one independent of the fader?

If you can unplug the faders by the 4pin plug, can you swap the middle and right ones over? Does the problem follow? If it does, it's the fader, if it doesn't its post line fader and possibly crossfader.

The middle is independent. I have swapped the middle and right faders and now the right channel works, middle one doesn't.

Seems to definitely be an up fader issue then. Got the replacement part number so just hopefully this UK distributor can sort one.

After all that, the 33 button is dead and the target lamp needs replacing. So too bad really.
