I'm doing 100+ miles a day at the moment so I suppose diesel might be better.

Ascension, it's a mk4 GT TDI. In my eyes its a stone cold classic and I've done a fair bit to it so it's hard to get rid of tbh.

Probably time to get a "grown up" car though. Fancy a bit of RWD and cruise control.

Had a mk4 TDI Golf before going to an E46 320Cd some years ago. I'd have thought you'd be good in a 330Cd, especially if chipped.

Nice one, same taste in cars then. Still got the E46?

Get a Mk6 GTD - lots of fun

Looking at £8k+ seems like and always wanted a 3 series. They are good though.

Someone lend me £50k so I can get an E30 M3.

Nah, had a 330Ci E46 and E93 335i since then and have now got an E92 M3.  It's fair to say I'm quite a BMW fan

I suggest a 330ci manual is your best choice. A Clubsport model with a manual, low miles could earn you money if you look after it. Don't be tempted by cheap E46 M3s because they will be neglected and will cost you a fortune to put right. It's arguable that the 330ci handles better (tighter steering rack) and is very nearly as fast in the real world anyway...

If you fancy a slightly rawer experience but a bit slower, an E36 328i may be worth a look.

If you don't mind FWD then an Alfa Romeo Brera may be worth a look. Not quite as nice handling as the BMW but it's a bit less rapey on parts prices. Mixture of diesels and petrols, diesels probably better bet than the petrols.

Apologies just re-read it - a 330cd would be worth a try. I'd suggest an Alfa Romeo GT Cloverleaf diesel as the engines are robust, front suspension can be iffy.
How about a Volvo C30 or a Mercedes CLK? A lot less sporty than the BMWs or Alfas, but available with diesels, pretty quick and in budget. And they're arguably more comfortable cruisers, which is what I'd want for a 100-mile schlep.

Cheers - knew you'd try shoehorn an Alfa in there

Will test drive some 330d's in the future, looks like the one.

You can pick up the new 5 litre RHD Mustangs for 10k but I don't know.. just doesn't seem right. Just seems a bit shit.

Once you start looking at classic muscle cars I guess you're looking at silly money for ones in good condition or silly money to fly in parts.

Classic or modern?
If classic go for the one that appeals visually - they're not the last word in handling dexterity, any of them, but they look cool and parts are easily found on the internet.

Modern ones, I like the Dodge Challenger V8 but the handling's a bit numb. A Mustang with some suspension mods may be achievable for £15k

I did see that but it's a bit too flash for me mate, I'm guessing I'd be forever throwing money at it to keep it on the road as well. Ideally I'm looking for a diesel. Some of the 2 litre tdi gt's seem good value for their age/mileage.

There's a new charge for old diesels in London from October. My guess is they will get hammered from now by this government in the future. I would buy a petrol of you're going to keep it more than a couple years.

You can get 2.0L petrol that isn't turbo gti, but they're rare.

If you don't mind auto this is splendid. If you're not bothered about power newer mk6 1.4 - 1.6 are very good on fuel economy, around the upper limit of your budget.

Nice one OEM that looks good, automatic wouldn't bother me at all. I don't really want to go lower than 2 litre as I want a bit of power for my money.
