It just reminds me of a Hyundai Coupe from the late 90s

Well of course it doesn't, that's a Fiat Multipla. That was designed to move families easily, which is was good at.

The three cars matey posted are performance driving machines, designed to be good to drive. If they fail at that first... If he's going for aesthetics he may as well go for the base model diesel and go mad with the options list.

You need to try an M2 sir. Rather more expensive than the M240i but then it is rather more of everything...

@nayf and co

I want to buy a 3 series at some point in the future, was looking at E36 and E46 M Sports around the 5k mark. Recommend me a 3 series or similar alternative that is fun to drive/quick.

Doing lots of miles for work so would prefer an auto box.

Coming from a remapped Golf which is great fun with ridiculous torque.

You should easily be able to pick up an e46 M Sport for £5k - with about 50-60k on the clock. I'd suggest a 330d if you're clocking up the miles.

I paid £3500 for my 330d M Sport a few years ago which had 90k on the clock. I think it's getting more and more difficult to find cars that old that have been looked after, though. My repair bill every year was increasing, and though nothing too drastic occurred I eventually decided to get rid and get something brand new.

330Cd E46 is a pretty good engine, I wouldn't have a 4 cylinder one, even though you'll get a bit better economy, they're nowhere near as fun to drive.

Get the swirl flaps blanked if you do get an E46 diesel, they can fail, fall into the engine/turbo and ruin the whole thing.

Are 330d's that quick though? Not impressed with the spec. Want to up the comfort levels but don't want to drive a barge. Need to test drive a few I reckon.

Maybe an E90??

Edit: newer 330Cd looks better

My mate just chopped his E90 335d in for similar issues.

DPF died because he did bugger all miles, got his swirl flaps deleted, but by then it was too late and his low end turbo was on the way out. Shame really, the torque on that thing was awesome.

WBAC gave him £6.5k and didn't notice the lake in the passenger footwell.

Mine was chipped so that probably helped a bit, but it was nippy. Especially as it weighed about 23 tons. Mine was pre-DPF as well, so when you floor it after driving sensibly for a long time, you could douse the general public in a puff of black smoke.

Pre-face lift E90s are not pretty cars.

330Cd does 0-60 in 7 seconds, a decent tune will probably have that down at least half a second.  Depends on what you class as fast, I guess.

What Mk Golf have you currently got?

If you're gonna get a E46, get a 330Ci, but good luck finding one that hasn't had x amount of owners and ragged to fuck for around £5k.

If you want a really good one, you're look at about £7K+ and then you're going into M3 monies. Make sure you get one with full service history as the oil services have to be done in a specific order.

Don't bother getting a 4 Cylinder E46, make sure you get a 6 cylinder as those engines are bullet proof.

Be careful of bushes, springs/coils and third party rims.

Good luck.

330ci is going to drink petrol. Is that a concern, 13?

That looks okay you know, I bet the service history isn't correct, but for that money, it's worth a punt if it drives well.

I hate dealers too, he's making a nice mark up on that motor.

I bought a manual E46 325ci M Sport in 2013 with 25k on the clock full service history. It has barely put a foot wrong, zero problems with engine just replaced brake pads and discs, its done 65k now.

Get about 20-25mpg around town, 35 if you drive sensible on the motorway.

Great fun to drive, 6cl engine sounds lovely.

I'd still opt for the Diesel: You'll get 40-50mpg and the engine is likely to go on forever

I'm doing 100+ miles a day at the moment so I suppose diesel might be better.

Ascension, it's a mk4 GT TDI. In my eyes its a stone cold classic and I've done a fair bit to it so it's hard to get rid of tbh.

Probably time to get a "grown up" car though. Fancy a bit of RWD and cruise control.

Had a mk4 TDI Golf before going to an E46 320Cd some years ago. I'd have thought you'd be good in a 330Cd, especially if chipped.

How do you know what E number your car is?. Is it down to the age or if it's a touring/saloon etc.
